The Georgia Satellites of 1988, riding the momentum of their shocking debut, slammed the world with “OPEN ALL NIGHT.” Here comes a soundboard album that will ingrain that scorching live performance into your brain. This work was recorded at the “London performance on July 19, 1988.” It’s a superb stereo soundboard recording. Speaking of the “OPEN ALL NIGHT Tour,” the official excavated live album “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE” is still fresh in our memory, but of course (?) this work is a different performance. To understand the situation, let’s first take a look at the schedule and overview of their activities at the time. April 8th + 10th: North America #1 (2 shows); May 27th – June 21st: North America #2 (13 shows) (June “OPEN ALL NIGHT” release); June 25th – July 19th: Europe (14 shows) ←★here★; July 31st – December 18th: North America #3 (27 shows) ←※Official. This is the latest official excavation master from THE GEORGIA SATELLITES in 1989. This London performance was the final day of the “European” leg, the month after the album’s release. The official “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE” was recorded in Cleveland in December, about five months before that. This show is also known for being broadcast on radio, and this work is the pinnacle of such FM soundboards. This is the air check master from that time, which was only recently released, and it’s incredibly amazing. Since it’s Master Direct, there are no dubbing marks, no noticeable reception disturbances or tape twist, and no sign of aging on the master. While the mix has the vividness of a broadcast, the sound quality itself feels natural even when mixed with the official “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE” release. A treasure trove of repertoire not heard on the official release. This completely official sound portrays a live performance not unlike “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE.” While the editing, which conforms to the broadcast timeframe of just under an hour, falls short of “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE,” it also includes plenty of repertoire not heard on that masterpiece. Let’s organize the sets by comparing them here. Open All Night (6 songs), Whole Lotta Shakin’, Down and Down, Dunk ‘n’ Dine (★), Open All Night, Sheila, Mon Cheri, and others (6 songs + α), Georgia Satellites: Keep Your Hands To Yourself (It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll) / Railroad Steel (Route 66), Other covers: The Race Is On (★), I Got You Babe (★), You Can’t Catch Me (★), Medley (★: Pretty Little Thing, Hip Shake, Amazing Grace) *Note: * indicates songs not heard on the official “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE” album. …And so it goes. While the “OPEN ALL NIGHT” numbers, which make up about half of the album, remain the core, they also perform “Dunk ‘n’ Dine,” which isn’t on “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE.” Even more colorful are the supporting covers. This album is so diverse that it could be said to have been completely replaced, even including the standard “Route 66” on “Railroad Steel” and a riff from STATUS QUO’s “Caroline” (perhaps a special treat for a UK performance). This superb live album also serves as the “UK edition of LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE.” Boasting sound quality comparable to the excellent official releases, it offers a more diverse repertoire with less overlap. This new masterpiece is highly recommended for both fans of the official albums and those experiencing THE GEORGIA SATELLITES in their prime for the first time. This superb stereo soundboard recording of the “London performance on July 19, 1988” is a recently released, top-notch updated master. While the mix has a lively broadcast vibe, the sound quality itself blends seamlessly with the official “LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE” release. It also features a variety of covers, including “Dunk ‘n’ Dine,” a track not included on the official release. This must-listen live album also serves as the “UK version of LIGHTNIN’ IN A BOTTLE.” Town & Country, London, England, July 19, 1988, STEREO SBD (59:15) 1. Whole Lotta Shakin’ 2. Down and Down 3.
