George Russell/RI, USA 1964

George Russell was a composer and arranger who continued to be ahead of his time. A 1964 Newport Jazz performance recording of his accomplishments is now available. It could be said that this was a time when I was delving deeper into the relationship between ensemble and improvisation. The album is full of famous songs, including “Stratus Funk,” which was also covered by Gil Evans, and the featured members include Thad Jones, John Gilmore, and Sheila Jordan. Russell, who was active in Europe in the 1960s, especially Scandinavia, and returned to the United States in 1970, can be felt as a pioneer. Live at Newport Jazz Festival,Newport,RI July.3.1964 1.
