Description

“AND THEN THERE WERE THREE TOUR 1978” was their first visit to Japan. The historical and superb footage is featured in the title. This work contains the “Columbus performance on October 10, 1978”. It is a masterpiece video that was meticulously assembled by overseas core enthusiasts from full-color 8mm film taken at the time. Our shop introduces many video works that make full use of 8mm from the 1970s, but this is a masterpiece that boasts exceptional perfection. Before touching on the contents, let’s first check the position of the show from the entire tour.・March 26th-April 22nd: North America #1 (18 performances) ・May 14th-June 24th: Europe #1 (26 performances) ・July 3rd-31st: North America #2 (20 performances) ・August 20th-September 9th: Europe #2 (10 performances) ・September 29th-October 22nd: North America #3 (17 performances) ←★Here★ ・November 27th-December 3rd: Japan (6 performances) This is the tour schedule for the “AND THEN THERE WERE THREE” era. The records at that time are vague, so it’s not certain, but I think you can get a rough idea of what it was like. The Columbus performance of this work was the 7th performance of the second half of the tour, “North America #1”. It was the timing of the legendary first visit to Japan when they had about 10 more performances. It is groundbreaking that such a show is still on video, but the quality is also really amazing. The first thing that is shocking is the “length”. If you are familiar with our 8mm film works, you probably know that 8mm has a short shooting time. It is not possible to go through a full show like in the 1980s and after, so the footage has to be fragmented. It is the same in this work, but the shooting timing is throughout the show, and the footage of all the songs is a total of 55 minutes. Even if each song is not complete, you can look at the whole view of the show. This is very rare even among the many 8mm film works. Furthermore, the “variety of angles” that seems to take advantage of the fragmentation. At the beginning, it starts with a distant view from the back seats, but the location changes for each shot, so you can enjoy every perspective of the opening. Moreover, the contents are amazing. Even just the front seats are wonderful, but there is even a shot from the backstage. The right sleeve of the stage, directly behind, and a diagonal view to the left… That is what you can witness a detailed performance with a close-up like a modern professional shot. The visual beauty of the scene is also extremely beautiful. The film may have been in good condition, but the colorful images, which seem to have been digitally brushed up, beautifully depict the best light show of the time. On top of that, there is a sense of stability that does not shake at all. I don’t know whether the people involved shot it on a tripod or corrected the shake digitally, but the extremely crisp beauty of the images runs throughout the entire film. It is the sound that makes such video art into an entertainment work. In fact, it was apparently shot in “8mm with sound”, which was rare at the time, but the sound was too record-like and it was not “enjoyable”. Therefore, the official FM sound of the “Chicago performance on October 13, 1978”, three days after the Columbus performance, is synchronized (and the best master is selected). In other words, it feels like “watching an official live album with video”. The synchronization is so perfect that it is hard to believe it is a different performance. It is also proof that GENESIS at that time was performing a highly polished show every night, but on top of that, it was “8mm with sound” which was a success. In the case of normal 8mm footage, you have to distinguish the song by gestures and hand and mouth movements, but in this work, g is able to accurately match the song and phrase. The show depicted with such quality is exactly “the last brilliance of 70’s prog” itself. Not only the precise performance, but also the theatrical performance by Phil Collins, the battle of the twin drums that sparks … Each one is depicted vividly. In the close-up of the backstage, the members’ beautiful skills can be felt in detail, and in the distant view, the magnificent illusion spun by the latest light show spreads across the screen. As mentioned above, each song is a digest, but the editing that took several months was also careful, and you can immerse yourself in it without any abruptness. It is truly a historical masterpiece. It is not just valuable, but it is a live video art that has been completed as a more than entertaining work with obsessive editing and superb FM sound. The fascinating “progressive rock” born in the UK. Experience the final brilliance of the 70’s with this album. Live at St. John’s Centre, Columbus, OH.
