Description

The “DUKE” era expanded the possibilities of progressive rock into the pop field and finally achieved the No. 1 hit in the UK. Introducing a superb live album where you can enjoy the rare “Back In N.Y.C.” sung by Phil Collins. This work includes “June 29, 1980 New York Performance”. This is a vacuum-packed superb audience recording of one night at the traditional large venue “Madison Square Garden”. Speaking of “DUKE”, the previous work solidified the foundation of the three-member band, and each member started their solo career. Even in recalling those days, let’s first check the show’s position from the overall picture of the tour. [“SMALLCREEP’S DAY” released on February 15th]・March 13th-23rd: UK (11 performances) [“DUKE” released on March 24th]・March 24th-April 24th: UK (32 performances) )・May 27th – June 30th: North America (35 performances) ←★Here★《Production of “FACE VALUE” started in June》 This is the panoramic view of 1980. The show opened with Mike Rutherford’s “SMALLCREEP’S DAY,” followed by “DUKE.” And the “DUKE TOUR” that began was a unique tour that only took place in three countries: the UK, the US, and Canada, and never in continental Europe. All three were still focused on GENESIS, but towards the end Phil’s activities became more active. Around the time of the final “North American” leg, production of “FACE VALUE” with Hugh Padjam began… It was also a turning point in the era. The New York performance of this work is the final stage of such “North America”. This was the second to last concert. This work, which records the highlight performance that is the final stage of the tour, is a wonderful and superb audience recording. The clarity, the response, the beauty… everything is overwhelming. It absorbs the real excitement of a huge venue, and if you listen to it with headphones, you can even feel the venue’s acoustics. However, the clarity and clarity of each note and the thickness of the core are far better than a poor sound board. And what is miraculous is the venue acoustics. I don’t have zero sense of distance, but that’s a strength rather than a drawback. The subtle acoustics are simply beautiful, creating the spectacle of a carefully mixed FM broadcast or an official live album, yet without hiding or clouding the edges. What’s more, unlike FM broadcasts, which are produced with a mix afterwards, it also has the vividness that can only be achieved by recording in one shot. Although the listening experience is FM/official level, it even gives off a sense of miracle. It is a beautiful sound that can only be achieved by audience recording, and it is a recording of elegance only for guest records. What is depicted with such quality is a wonderful show that stepped on the accelerator towards the tour final. The set focuses on 7 of the 12 songs from their latest album “DUKE”, and evenly incorporates representative songs from “SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND” to “…AND THEN THERE WERE THREE…”. What’s more, this balance creates a wonderful new-age progressive rock feeling. “DUKE” was a masterpiece that continued to have a progressive rock flavor while expanding its popularity, but it dismantled and rebuilt that world by incorporating past repertoire. The opening song “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Squonk”, which became a hot topic at the time, and the middle song “In The Cage/The Colony of Slippermen/Afterglow”, which later became standard songs, were also created, and the suite feeling of the medley performance was both familiar and grand. Both are compatible. Even more delicious is the encore “Back In N.Y.C.” This song was played for the first time since the dazzling Breedway tour, and only at some shows on “DUKE TOUR”. You can enjoy such a rare fill version with the best sound. Furthermore, the famous songs scattered throughout the album are unique to 1980. Not only the valuable “Guide Vocal” only for this tour, but also past repertoire such as “One For The Vine”, “Deep In The Motherlode” and “The Lady Lies” have not been played since. And above all, “Duke’s Travels” and “Duke’s End.” The album gave us a taste of the pride of progressive rock, but it was even more overwhelming on stage. They had reached their peak as a group of performers, and their potential exploded with tremendous force. While opening up a new era with their album, they still exuded a rich progressive rock flavor on stage. It is also a delicious live album because of such a turning point. After that, with Phil’s “FACE VALUE” becoming a big hit, GENESIS as a whole family overran the pop world. 1980 was the eve and the beginning, but at the same time, his technical performance on stage was at its peak. A masterpiece live album where you can experience the highlight performance of such a turning point with the best sound.
