Description

The 1970 Fillmore West by the Faces was a shocking upgrade from the master, but in fact, it was not their first appearance at the venue, and their first appearance at Fillmore West was in May of the same year. However, to my surprise, there is also a great quality audience recording of this performance. However, the sound source itself has been in circulation for some time and has been released in the past. The sound image of this recording is also very close, and unlike the autumn tour, the band is still on the market and just starting out. Even at such a timing, there was an audience recording with such great sound quality. Moreover, the versions and items that were in circulation in the past were recorded in mono. If it was recorded so close on the 1970 Aud, it would have been of such quality that it would not have felt strange even if it was mono. However, a shocking fact that was revealed in the newly released version by Krw_co… that the original master was stereo! Needless to say, it’s not a stereo-like sound spread due to phase shift, but if you listen to the conversations around you at the opening, it’s obvious that this is a solid stereo recording, and of course the applause that rises between songs can be heard from both the left and right. Although it was originally an audience recording with very good sound quality, the difference is too big. Above all, it’s shocking that the Faces’ stage was recorded as a stereo audience recording in May. The sound source was already attractive for its impressive sound pressure, but when the rich sound spread unique to stereo is added to it, it’s already invincible. This is a sound source that has been upgraded to rival the Fillmore in October, which was released at the same time, so “GRAF ZEPPELIN” also supervised the release. At the same time as being a stereo recording, the audience recording, which is full of analog feeling and charm, is tightly adjusted from phase to pitch. And because the sound quality is good and the sound image is close, it is conveyed that the Faces’ passionate performance was already captivating the American audience as early as May. The Faces, whose pop sound of the Small Faces has been transformed into a laid-back 1970s rock sound by the addition of Rod and Ronnie, overwhelm the audience at the Fillmore. What’s interesting is Ronnie’s slide solo time, “Around The Plynth”. In October, this song is a break time for Rod and the other band members, but at this point Rod doesn’t retreat from the stage and stirs up the audience. It’s like Rod is playing the role of inciting the audience, as if Ronnie is saying, “I’m playing longer than usual~”, and it’s heartwarming. With the powerful sound pressure and amazing stereo, combined with the familiarity that allows you to listen to it quickly on one CD, this is another shocking audience document that is a must-have item for the Faces in 1970. The recordings at Santa Monica and the Fillmore in October looked great on mono speakers, but here you can enjoy the amazing stereo feeling with headphones! The best version remastered from the master tape by the familiar Krw_co! The Aud sound source has been in circulation since the early 2000s, but it was mono and the bandwidth was down from around 16kHz. The version released by Krw_co this time is the same as the sound source that was in circulation in the past, but the point is that it is a stereo recording. The original tape was a stereo recording. It has a slightly moody texture, and compared to Fillmore West in October of the same year, the sound is not delicate, but rather the performance is much closer, and the sound is thicker and more expansive. There are two cuts between songs, but there are no cuts during the performance, so it can be said to be a great sound source from the early ’70s that can be listened to all at once on one CD.
