In 2017, four concerts will be held in New York and Los Angeles to celebrate Clapton’s 50th anniversary in music. The concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York, held on March 19th and 20th, are all recorded in digital audience recordings. Since he announced his retirement from touring in 2014, he has continued to perform live on an intermittent basis, and in an interview he said that he had effectively stopped performing live. This special, held at a time when attention was focused on his future, features a parade of his representative songs, from Cream to his recent solo numbers, as if to summarize his 50-year career. Although the order of the songs was different on both days, the same songs were performed, and both performances were about 90 minutes long and consisted of 15 songs, which is a slightly shorter set than usual. However, since Clapton was the only guitarist, you can hear plenty of his playing, including his solos, which is a major point. Additionally, Gary Clark Jr. and Jimmie Vaughan, who are credited as guests, not only perform the opening act, but also appear for the encore song “Before You Accuse Me,” engaging in a heated guitar battle, making for some great listening action.
