Description

The definitive edition of the 1986 Short Club Tour is here! Get the original stereo soundboard master! This work is also a shocking master provided by the heavyweight taper who lives in the UK. This is a complete recording of the best stereo soundboard of the concert at The Ritz, a club in New York on November 23, 1986, which is famous for being released by multiple labels in the past. However, this work is the original DAT master provided by the heavyweight taper. Therefore, the graininess and power of the sound surpasses the previously released board and is not half bad. As expected, the heavyweight taper has brought something amazing. The official live DVD from the “Montreux Jazz Festival” of the same year has also been released, but the set list and band members (drummers) are different from the European tour in July, which will give you new interest. In addition, the slight sound slippage (sound shaking) in the intro of Cocaine, which was seen on the previously released board, did not occur in this master. In other words, it is thought that it was a problem when copying the previous master. Therefore, it is a quality that can be said to be another representative title of 1986 that you can listen to with confidence. The sound quality and play quality of the powerful sound exceeding the official. This work is the definitive version of this day. The first precious stage of the AUGUST tour after the drummer change. Now, let’s review Clapton’s activities this year from the recording of the album “AUGUST” that was the basis of this tour. November 23 and 24, 1986: Appeared at a special gig at the Ritz in New York, USA (Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones made a surprise appearance on the 23rd). ←★Here★ December 8-16, 1986: Recorded the soundtrack for the movie Lethal Weapon at Townhouse Studios in London. December 23, 1986: Appeared at Gary Brooker’s charity concert at the Village Hall in Dunsfold, Surrey, UK. It was a busy year, with many appearances at events including charity events, but the topic was that in the previous year, Clapton had done additional sessions in Los Angeles in preparation for the release of his album “BEHIND THE SUN”, and there he met local famous session musicians Nathan East (bass) and Greg Phillinganes (keyboards), who he met there and got along well with. He parted ways with the members of his previous support band and invited them to record his new album. As with the previous album, he hired his friend musician Phil Collins as producer, and recorded at Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles. Because Clapton was in high spirits, songs were born one after another, and recording was completed in two weeks. Clapton, who was eager to play with the new members, went on a short tour of jazz festivals in various European countries in July with the members who supported the album, without waiting for the album’s release. The only times that Clapton had toured with a setlist of new songs before the release of the album were the comeback tour in 1974 and the Japan tour in 1977. That shows how eager he was to show off his new songs. After that, he organized a four-day club tour in the fall. This day in particular was a special occasion to celebrate the opening of The Ritz. The songs from the new album were Wanna Make Love To You (this song was eventually removed from the album in exchange for It’s In The Way That You Use It, but was included on the 12-inch single), It’s In The Way That You Use It, Run, Miss You, Tearing Us Apart, and Holy Mother. Producer Phil Collins participated on drums for the summer European tour, but he was also a busy solo artist and could not be made a permanent member, so at this point Clapton scouted Steve Ferrone, whom he had met on a session album for Christine McVie. For Ferrone, this club tour was his first live performance with Clapton (so there are parts where he is not yet familiar with Clapton, such as when he is not in sync with Clapton at the beginning of the intro of It’s In The Way That You Use It). The band, which includes Ferrone and all black backing members, is also powerful, and Clapton is inspired by their dynamic performance and plays hard. What’s interesting is that, influenced by these two, the impression of the new songs and their representative songs has changed to a black contemporary taste. East plays a fusion style that also decides on chopper playing, and Phillinganes also uses jazzy chords and synths, breathing new air into Clapton’s songs. The stage starting with his specialty Crossroads is fresh, and Clapton’s enthusiasm is palpable. The sharpness of White Room and I Shot The Sheriff is also excellent. Same Old Blues is a much longer version that is much expanded from the previous year’s performance. According to Clapton, East and Phillinganes were from the jazz and fusion fields, so they had no background in primitive blues, and playing this song clearly changed their awareness of their roots. The ideal band that stimulated each other was born that year. The encore of this era consisted of two songs, the first of which was Sunshine Of Your Love, which was the first set in 11 years. Clapton seemed to have difficulty with the phrases at the beginning of his solo, so from this point on, he mostly traced the phrases of the standard number Blue Moon like the original version of Cream to avoid making mistakes (although he did ad lib when he was really into it). Further On Up the Road, which has a slightly jazzy flavor due to this lineup, is also a nice touch. A rare stage with Keith Richards from the Stones! Keith Richards made an appearance on stage that day. The reason is that the Stones had released the album “DIRTY WORKS” the previous year, but Mick Jagger had focused on his solo project, so the Stones’ tour plans were canceled, and Keith, who had fallen out with Mick, had an open schedule. Therefore, when Keith, who was in New York, found out that his old friend Clapton was performing there, he brought his guitar (Telecaster) and showed up. When Clapton called Keith onto the stage, he introduced him as his “blood brother.” He must have had a special feeling for Keith, who had been working hard together since their early days in London when they were teenagers. Incidentally, when Keith appeared, Clapton took off his jacket and put it on Keith. The performance with Keith was the highlight of the day. You can see how Keith is desperately trying to get into Clapton’s repertoire, which is completely unfamiliar to him. In Cocaine, Clapton was given the first solo, and Keith showed off his characteristic playing, though a little awkwardly. In Layla, it was Keith’s first performance and the song had a chord progression that included cliches, so even Keith played obbligatos that were not very noticeable, but this was inevitable. If I had to say something, I think that if Clapton had specially set up Chuck Berry’s rock and roll numbers (such as Little Queenie and Let It Rock) out of consideration for Keith, Keith would have been able to play like a fish in water, and Clapton would have been able to handle it… However, this was the only time in their long careers that the two performed together in Layla. It is definitely worth listening to for rock fans. In the recording of “AUGUST”, the first tour with a new guitar to replace Blackie, and in this tour, Clapton began using a new custom-made Strat newly developed by Fender instead of Blackie Strat. The decision was made after Blackie’s neck wore down and it started to affect his playing, but the custom Strat with the Lace Sensor pickup produced a tone that was completely different from the vintage Blackie. It was treble, bright, and flashy. This tone, which was different from the dry half-tone sound of Blackie, was a perfect fit for the contemporary songs on “AUGUST,” and was also perfect for expressing Clapton’s aggressiveness on stage. This custom modelThe board is available in three colors: Ferrari Red, Seven Up Green, and Pewter Gray. Clapton used Ferrari Red for the album and July tour, but for the first time on this club tour, he used the Pewter Gray model. With the guitar and band members, this is a great live recording that allows you to enjoy the “new Clapton”. This is a soundboard recording of an important milestone in Clapton’s career that cannot be missed in many ways. Moreover, it is a complete DAT master of the original stereo soundboard.
