Description

Recently, Marco Moir’s treasured master recordings, a new taper that has been making waves online, also include a vintage recording of Eric Clapton! This is the first time it’s been released, featuring a high-quality stereo audience recording of the July 19, 1985 Costa Messa performance from the “Behind the Sun US Tour Second Leg.” While a very good stereo audience master recording of this performance was previously released as part of the 6-CD “L.A. NIGHTS” album, Marco’s master recording is, of course, completely different. This is the first time it’s been released, featuring his own high-quality recording. While the sound quality is superior to “L.A. NIGHTS” in terms of clarity and sound balance, this release excels in realism and vividness. Unfortunately, due to Moir’s late arrival to the venue, the first three tracks (Tulsa Time, Motherless Children, I Shot the Sheriff) were not included, and the fourth track was cut in (although only a small portion of the opening track was cut). For the release, we have corrected the fast pitch, making it easier to listen to and more accurate than the file directly on the net. Now, let’s clarify the significance of this performance in this year in chronological order.・February 28th to March 15th, 1985: European tour including the UK. During this period, <March 1st, 1985: Album “Behind the Sun” released> ・April 9th to May 3rd, 1985: US tour, first leg ・May 8th, 1985: Appearance on the US live music show Late Night With David Letterman ・June 21st to July 27th, 1985: US tour, second leg ←★here★ ・October 5th to October 11th, 1985: Sixth Japan tour ・October 14th to November 6th, 1985: Short European tour after touring Alaska and London ・December 3rd to 23rd, 1985: A break, but during this time they made surprise appearances on stage at concerts by Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, Sting, Gary Brooker, Dire Straits, and others. Following the release of “Behind the Sun,” which was completed the previous year, it’s fair to say they spent a year promoting this album. That’s how confident they were. They covered all of Europe and even visited North America twice. Furthermore, splitting the legs allowed for some variation in the setlist. The catalyst for this was their appearance on “The David Letterman Show” on May 8th. Responding to a request from the show’s musical director, Paul Shaffer, they played the White Room with the show’s house band for the first time in 17 years. Satisfied with the result, Clapton included this song on the second leg of the tour. Therefore, you can hear this song on this album. The inclusion of this song was a great choice, as the performance ended with Clapton’s long, wah-wah-heavy solo, eliciting endless cheers from the audience. Clapton was forced to say “Thank you,” and the performance was captured forcing his way into the next song. What makes this album so valuable is not only the high-quality sound but also the outstanding performances it contains. Including “White Room,” the sharp, thrilling playing on “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Same Old Blues,” “Tangled in Love,” “Badge,” “Let It Rain,” “Double Trouble,” “Cocaine,” “Layla,” “Forever Man,” and “Further On Up the Road” is simply incredible! Almost every track is a blast of fast-paced, slow-hand playing. Furthermore, percussionist Sergio “Pastora” Rodriguez, who was with Clapton from 1975 to 1977, joins the band for the encore, marking their first collaboration in eight years. Clapton even included a special feature of his unique percussion work after the guitar solo on “Forever Man.” The original studio version featured Lenny Castro’s percussion, so this rendition here is a perfect fit. This work is not merely a premiere master release. The “amazing Clapton” here is a must-listen for any rock fan. It was the final stage of the tour, when Clapton showed the world he was still alive and well at Live Aid and was even more confident. It’s safe to say that this was a peak in his career. And what’s captured in this work is one of the performances that truly demonstrated Clapton’s incredible talent. While the opening portion is unreleased, this is an excellent premiere master.
