Description
Another valuable live source from the 1971 tour of the second DEEP PURPLE is now available! This is a 2-CD set of the May 21st performance in Berlin, Germany, recorded by an excellent audience master, from the 1971 spring European tour that was held in parallel with the production of “FIREBALL”! DEEP PURPLE released their album “IN ROCK” and single “BLACK NIGHT” in the spring of 1970, which became hits in the UK and Europe, establishing their identity as a Ritchie-centered hard rock band. As the band’s popularity grew, the scale of their live shows grew and the number of shows increased. The band began work on their next album, “FIREBALL”, around September 1970, but this work was slow to progress (due in part to their busy schedules). They released the lead single “STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN” in February 1971, and embarked on a UK tour starting the same month, followed by a spring European tour. This work “BERLIN 1971” is a disc version of the performance at Berlin’s “Deutschland Hall” on May 21st from the spring tour of 1971, which has been carefully remastered from an excellent audience master provided by an overseas collector. is. This day’s sound source had a previously released title with the same name (of course on a different label). This previous release, which had a pretty good sound at the time, was one of the staples of the ’71 live show. It’s probably a familiar (and nostalgic) title for enthusiasts. However, this item had the songs in the wrong order, and for some reason “Mandrake Root” appeared in the second song, making it a “slightly disappointing” sound source for fans. Therefore, this work has been remastered with pitch corrections and other improvements, and this point has also been improved. The song order follows the set list at the time, allowing you to enjoy the live performance in a natural flow. The opening “Speed King”, which was missing in the previous release, was unfortunately not included in this master. Therefore, this work starts from the second song “Strange Kind Of Woman” at that time. Although there is some hiss noise derived from the master, the natural and mild sound image is very easy to listen to. Another nice point is that the performance is captured with a high sense of stability and balance throughout the live performance. You can enjoy not only Richie’s guitar and John’s organ, but also Gillan’s vocals and Roger and Pace’s rhythm section. The performance is reminiscent of the spring of 1971, with high tension, excellent improvisation, and rich interplay. In “Strange Kind Of Woman”, John is also involved (somewhat) in the dialogue between Gillan and Richie, and in the second half, Gillan also responds to Richie’s phrases with a unique performance, conveying a fun mood. Following “Into The Fire”, in which Roger’s bass powerfully reproduces the song’s thoughts, “Child In Time”, which is over 20 minutes, appears. From the first half, performances that captivate the listener’s ears continue, including the intro where John’s organ plays delicate phrases in a flowing manner, and Gillan’s vocals with a fierce scream. Richie’s guitar is “fierce yet accurate,” and his unique play at the time is wonderful. The scene where he sings in unison with John is a great listen! “Paint It Black” on this day is a rather short take, but “Mandrake Root” on disc 2 is a super long version of 36 minutes (long for this time of year)! After the song part (about 2 minutes) in which Gillan explodes with superhuman high tones, we enter the jam session part where all the members get mixed up! You will be overwhelmed by the storm of improvisation that pops up one after another with John and Richie! In the quiet part in the middle, Richie’s guitar can be heard in detail and realistically, and the contrast between stillness and movement is vivid (Ritchie plays a part of “Hey Joe” at around the 21 minute mark, and immediately after, he talks with Gillan. doing). It’s a great performance worthy of being called the highlight of the live show! For the encore, “Black Night” and “Lucille” were released in succession with the best rhythm and groove. Here too, Ritchie actively interacts with Gillan and releases an explosive play that is perfect for the expression of a band. The band kept up the high tension until the end, and the live came to a completely fiery ending! The spring of 1971 was a time when the performances and interplay of the second period of PURPLE were especially fulfilling, and the support of fans was high. This work, which is packed with the flavor of the live performance at that time, will excite all PURPLE fans and make them very satisfied. An exciting masterpiece that all British hard rock fans should listen to has been decided to be released! Live at Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, Germany 21st May 1971 TRULY AMAZING SOUND Disc 1(37:51) 1.
