Description

The rare edition of the glorious 2nd season DEEP PURPLE will be released! This work was performed in Vienna on March 14, 1973, about one month after the release of “WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE.” Only the first half of the live show has been known for a long time on this day, and it is a live show that has been loved by the compilation-like already released “ATLANTIC CROSSING 1973” and “DEEPEST 1973”. This work is based on the same recording as the previous one, and adds the second half with a different sound source to realize a complete version of the show. This title was previously released on the Shades label and received great acclaim, with people saying, “I never thought I’d be able to listen to the full-length version!” The first half is the same recording as the previous one, but it is not a copy of the previous one, but a long version recreated from the cassette master. The pitch, which was previously out of order, is accurate, and the sound is natural without excessive equalization. Originally, it was one of the highest quality recordings on this tour, but it was the best and longest version. This first half is up to 5:52 of “Drum Solo/The Mule” at the end of Disc 1. The separate recording that includes “Space Truckin’” and “Black Night” from the second half of the drum solo has a sound that is one grade lower than the first half of the show, and tends to be a little muffled. Of course, the musical tones take center stage, and you won’t (never!) search for musical tones amidst all the loud noises, but to be honest, it’s the kind of good sound that needs a “at the time” excuse. This work was completed in this way, but of course, the mere appearance of a full-length version will not make it a great success. The first half, which has been known for a long time, is so wonderful that it became a hot topic that “you can listen to the continuation of that live performance!” “That live” is the second season of DEEP PURPLE, which is in great condition. As an image at the time, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a lazy performance with no motivation, but it is a crisp live performance that reminds you of “MADE IN JAPAN”. After all, the opening song “Highway Star” got me into a groove. The Genoa performance four days before this work has also been discovered, where Ritchie’s solo, which was awkward, was played crisply, and Guillain was also flying from the beginning. “Strange Kind Of Woman” also has a cool jam-like start that is typical of this period, and the interaction between Richie and Gillan in the second half is also high tension with sparks flying. And “Mary Long” is delicious because it was released in the first half of 1973. The intro introduces the “British National Anthem” and Gillan’s relaxed vocals are wonderful. At the Genoa performance four days ago, Richie’s solo disappeared in the middle, but on this day he played it perfectly and reached the ending with a full mood. Such a good performance continues in the second half of the separately recorded show. The most amazing song is “Space Truckin’”. Ritchie’s precise improvisational solo with slow and slow transition from quiet to dynamic, dramatically aggressive, and Jon Lord’s thunderous Keith Emerson-like synth solo are also extremely high tension. Unusually, the last riff of the song is also played on a synth. Even in the encore “Black Night”, the intro where the band gradually becomes one seems to be at its peak, and the moment when Richie’s free-form solo transitions to a snappy phrase is also the best. In general, DEEP PURPLE, the second season from 1973, has the impression of being low-spirited. However, with all five geniuses, there is no way they can just laze around every day. Of course, there were also miraculously wonderful performances. Certainly, this work is one that is difficult to say of the highest quality. However, that is precisely why it is packed with the best performances that only core enthusiasts know and secretly monopolize. This live album is solid proof that they were still shining even in their final years. Please take this opportunity to experience the “truth of 1973”!
