Description

The most important professional shot of David Bowie is reprinted. This work is a television broadcast video of “Berlin era Bowie” Japan tour recorded by a certain public broadcasting station. A professional shot video of “December 12, 1978 NHK Hall performance”, which was not only the final performance in Japan but also the whole world of “LOW AND HEROES TOUR 1978”. This is the highest quality version in history. This professional shot has long been known as a masterpiece representing the Berlin era, but the highest peak master was released in 2002. It was “TOKYO 1978 (MDM-001)” on the Masterport label. In any case, it boasted overwhelming quality that wiped out the previous releases, shocking Bowie fans all over the world. Anyway, the quality was at an extraordinary level, with overwhelming vividness, depth, and smoothness of the pixels. Everywhere you look, it was filled with intensely clear visual beauty that you wouldn’t expect from a video from the 1970s. That’s because this original master is not an ordinary air check. Although video decks had already appeared at that time, it was still a time when they were not widely used. It was a time when it was common to never watch a television broadcast twice, and fans all over the country were watching this broadcast with the determination to meet it once in a lifetime, just like the actual stage. In those days, there was a person who was recording with the most advanced commercial deck at that time. The recording maniac was an enthusiastic Bowie fan, and as soon as he found out about the broadcast, he brought along a video tape, which was expensive at the time, and asked an acquaintance to record it at a place with a commercial deck. He couldn’t help but try the best way he could, as much as he could think of. It was because of that desire that he was able to leave the master behind. So far, we have talked about the original recording master. This work is not a copy, but an upgraded version. In fact, even now, nothing has been released that surpasses the master of this recording maniac, but this work was borrowed from the maniac himself again and digitized with the latest technology. Furthermore, the slight deterioration over time has been repaired with digital remastering, making it the definitive version that has been done perfectly. This version was released last year as “TOKYO 1978” and quickly sold out and was discontinued. In fact, the quality of this work is the ultimate. Unlike the 2002 version, it was re-digitized by a specialized overseas manufacturer. Recently, our store has been very popular with Japanese laser disc reprint series, but this upgrade makes full use of the manufacturer’s analog reprint know-how. Not only did we bring out the quality of the original master to the utmost, but we also thoroughly repaired the latest and meticulous digital mastering. Of course, we did not force the highlights or use unrefined equalization. The main task was to carefully correct the several noises in the audio one by one. In 2016, we took every possible measure to create the best version ever. The resulting beautiful images and sounds are clearly more vivid and have a deeper texture than the Masterport label version. Every wrinkle in the shirt, every guitar string, every strand of hair is clearly visible, and even if it sways with intense action, it is drawn without blur or disorder. There is no popping noise that was a concern in the previous release. The show drawn with that quality is truly blissful. The highlight is the six consecutive “Ziggy Stardust” in the second half. In addition to “LOW” and “HEROES” from the Berlin era, this tour also has the masterpiece “Ziggy Stardust” as one of its major pillars. “Five Years”, “Soul Love”, “Star”, “Hang On To Yourself”, “Ziggy Stardust”, and “Suffragette City” were performed in Japan, but all of them are included in this work. In particular, “Suffragette City” has been omitted from the official album “STAGE” no matter how many times it is supplemented, so it is exceptional to be able to hear the performance at that time in official quality. This program is not a complete version of the show, but none of these six songs were missed. This shows how well the broadcast staff at the time captured the feelings of Bowie fans. Bowie, who loved Japan, stayed in Japan after this live performance and enjoyed Christmas in 1978. He sings dandy in a rainbow-colored shirt with his chest open, and Bowie writes about the world of Ziggy in a beige coat. This is a masterpiece among masterpieces that tells the story of the NHK Hall performance, which was the final performance of the “Berlin era” that was particularly brilliant in his career. Bowie’s love for Japan, the sincerity of the staff who produced the program, and the passion of the recording enthusiast who wanted to “do everything he could.” It is because of these things that this rare footage has survived to the present day. It is because that passion has transformed into quality that “he did everything he could” and set a new world record. The image of Bowie shining in Japan for more than a century.
