Description

2001 is remembered as the year of the New York terrorist attacks. The world changed before and after that, and it was a historic event that expanded the concept of war from between nations to terrorist organizations. Endless daily life changes completely one day. It will be engraved in people’s memories as a shocking event that made us realize this once again. We Japanese experienced the same thing with the Great East Japan Earthquake. There is a difference between natural disasters and man-made terrorism, but both were events that woke up humanity to the fact that we are living in an era where tomorrow is uncertain. Bowie’s album “HEATHEN” was created with the theme of such an uncertain future. The title means “pagan”. The production of “TOY”, which was intended to present the past with a modern interpretation, was stalled, and Bowie was filled with a blocked consciousness both in the past and the future. It was under such circumstances that the album “HEATHEN” was produced. Bowie must have had a strong attachment to “HEATHEN”, so he put a lot of effort into promoting it, actively holding numerous events and appearing on television. Immediately after the release, he even performed a live concert in which he played all the songs from the albums “LOW” and “HEATHEN” to compare them (Helden label “LIVE LOW”). This work was one of the concerts that were held as part of such promotions. On June 15, 2002, a live recording was made for television broadcast at Sony Studios in New York with fans in attendance. Although it was for the promotion of the new album, as the title of the program suggests, the set list was planned to play songs requested by fans, and it was interesting that it was a selection of Bowie’s best songs from the past, including new songs. The live opened with “FAME”. It seems that this was the only song that was not requested but was planned from the beginning. On a stage decorated with electric lights saying “BOWIE” in the background, Bowie appeared wearing a velvet jacket and headphones-type ear monitors. Although Bowie creates his image from time to time with eccentric fashion, hairstyle, makeup, etc., he stood on the stage in a very natural appearance at this time, and his smart appearance was unbearably cool. He smiles, sometimes winks at the audience, and gives directions to the band members with gestures, giving a great performance. Above all, Bowie is in a very good mood and you can clearly see that he is enjoying the stage. He keeps smiling at the excited audience, and you can see his unique grin. Every gesture makes you feel like Bowie. The stage proceeds in a way that fans from all over the United States talk to Bowie on the stage, conveying their requests, and Bowie responds to them. Before each request, they talk excitedly about their memories with Bowie, which is heartwarming. The song selection seems to be decided on the spot without any prior discussion, and after the conversation, you can see him flipping through the sheet music while preparing. Michael, who lives in Minneapolis, requested “Changes.” He said he wanted to thank Bowie for enriching his life through music, and when he heard this, Bowie smiled broadly. Betty, who lives in Massachusetts, has been a fan for 20 years and her request was “China Girl”. In addition, there were fans who saw Ziggy Stardust’s tour decades ago, and enthusiastic fans of two generations who called their little sons on the phone. The stage, the audience, and the other side of the phone, all of which were united with various fans, was truly wonderful. This work completely records “LIVE BY REQUEST” held in New York on June 15, 2002 with professional shots and soundboards. Not only that, but the two songs “I’ve Been Waiting For You” and “Cactus”, which were cut from the broadcast, are also recorded with professional shots and soundboards, making this the complete version. Two years later, Bowie stopped his activities, but this is an energetic and overwhelming performance that gives no hint of that. SONY STUDIOS, NEW YORK CITY, NY U.S.A. June 15, 2002 AUDIO DISC 01.
