Description

A studio album that compiles treasured soundboards from the 1971 masterpiece “HUNKY DORY” is now available. There are four types of sound sources included in this work. It is a two-disc set with two types on each disc. To summarize the outline briefly… ・First half of DISC 1: BBC session “IN CONCERT” ・Second half of DISC 1: Rare promo “BOWPROMO1” ・First half of DISC 2: “HUNKY DORY” outtakes ・Second half of DISC 2: BBC session “SOUND OF THE 70s” … and so on. All of them are well known, but they are carefully selected and excavated masters that update the “highest quality”. Let’s take a closer look at the contents of each one. [First half of Disc 1: BBC session “IN CONCERT”] First up is BBC’s famous program “IN CONCERT”. It is a studio session recorded on June 5, 1971 and broadcast on June 20. This was just when he started working on “HUNKY DORY,” and he led Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, and Mick Woodmansey, who also participated in the album. In addition, guests Dana Gillespie, who also sang on “Ziggy Stardust,” George Underwood, who was in charge of the cover art for “HUNKY DORY,” and Geoffrey Alexander (Jeff McCormack) also participated. This session is said to be a rare item and the eve of Ziggy. This session is also included in the official album “BOWIE AT THE BEEB,” but the content and sound of this work are different. While the official version was a mono rebroadcast version, this work was digitized directly from the BBC transcription LP “BBC PICK OF THE POPS.” The broadcast itself is different from the official version, so there are no “Bombers” or “Almost Grown”, but on the other hand, this version has “Queen Bitch”, “The Supermen”, “Song For Bob Dylan”, and “Andy Warhol”, which are not included in the official version, and includes the hosting by John Peel, all uncut. What’s even bigger is the sound. This transcription LP is known as the “only stereo version”, and this work is a rare version that collectors want so much that they can’t help but get their hands on it. You can experience a stereo space that is completely different from the official mono version. [Second half of Disc 1: Rare Promo “BOWPROMO1”] Next is the rare listening promo record “BOWPROMO1”. This promo is a very rare item that was pressed in only 500 copies, and it is split with Bowie on side A and Dana Gillespie on side B. Dana was a female singer who dated Bowie in her teens, and both sides are reprinted in this work. The essential Bowie side features seven early versions of “HUNKY DORY”. In modern terms, it is a “rough mix”, and all the songs have different chorus and guitar effects, balance of each instrument, and strings and other decorations. The most different are “Eight Lines Poem” and “Quicksand”. The former is a different take with temporary lyrics for the vocals, and the latter is a full stereo mix from the beginning, unlike the century version that becomes stereo halfway through. “It Ain’t Easy” from the next album “Ziggy Stardust” is also included, so you can see that it is already completed. This promo is also available as a bootleg from an overseas press, but the vintage sound was distorted by strange equalization. This work has been reprinted from the actual record in perfect condition, so you can enjoy the natural sound of the original record. [First half of Disc 2: “HUNKY DORY” outtakes] The opening of Disc 2 is decorated with a collection of outtakes from the masterpiece “HUNKY DORY”. Outtakes were also included in the 1990 reissue of “HUNKY DORY” by Rykodisc, but this work is completely different. You can enjoy 6 songs/7 takes that do not overlap at all. Moreover, the content is extremely wonderful. Even if the rarity of the songs not included in the album is aside, each song is full of the potential of the “HUNKY DORY” era. Moreover, it is not a practice or half-finished work, but a solid completion, and the sound quality is the same superb sound as the official album. It is truly a treasured gem of 6 songs/7 takes. [Second half of Disc 2: BBC Session “SOUND OF THE 70s”] Finally, another treasured recording from BBC. It is a recording of an appearance on the famous program “SOUND OF THE 70s” hosted by Bob Harris. Bowie appeared six times in the 70s, but this work is “Recorded on September 21, 1971, broadcast on October 4”, and shows an acoustic live performance with just Mick Ronson and the two of them. This session is highly praised by enthusiasts as the “most brilliant” among the many BBCs. This session is also included in the official album “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”, but there are only three songs. This work is the complete version of the seven-song session. And the sound is also wonderful. The stereo feeling is slightly different from the official version, but this work is even more natural. Furthermore, the natural “ringing” of the analog feeling is wonderful, and the whole body is wrapped in the acoustic melody and singing voice spun by Mick and Bowie. You can truly immerse yourself in the exquisite sound space. BBC sessions and precious outtakes reproduced on a scale beyond the official. Both are filled with the brilliance of Bowie who created “HUNKY DORY” and was heading towards “Ziggy Stardust”. This is a gem of a studio recording album that contains the highest quality quality in the history of such treasures. This is a two-disc set that you should love forever between “HUNKY DORY” and “Ziggy Stardust”.
