The concert began with Esther Phillips singing Billie Holiday’s famous “God Bless the Child” with great expressiveness, followed by Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar,” overwhelmed by the thick tenor, and the dynamic alto. “Mr. Blues”, which represents the irresistible Hank Crawford; “Windows”, a masterpiece written by his ally Chick, featuring the beautiful flute of Joe Farrell, who just left Return to Forever, and the master Hubert Laws; A heated saxophone battle between Grover Washington, Turrentine, Crawford, and Farrell on Rollins’ masterpiece “Airgin,” followed by Freddie Hubbard’s piercing trumpet throughout, and a perfect collaboration in the background.
