Description

The stage at the Woodstock Festival was a big event for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and was even called “the symbol of Woodstock” by the music magazines of the time. Although the performance was glimpsed in two albums that also served as the soundtrack for the film of the festival, it was still far from a complete recording. Also, the existence of an audience recording was hopeless because of the rain that hit along the way. In fact, since it was officially recorded, it is certain that a complete multi-track version exists. Furthermore, the set list of the day was known in advance by research by enthusiasts around the world, and I was surprised by the unique song selection that was completely different from the composition of their subsequent stages. This made me want to hear the full-length version all the more, which is why the official release of the album in small doses was just frustrating. Furthermore, Neil Young’s “Sea Of Madness” was not taken on the day of Woodstock, but rather at the Fillmore (i.e. unrelated to Woodstock), and the final touch was that the soundtrack takes, such as Graham Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” had rhythm and lead guitar overdubs on the acoustic performance, and they were done by musicians who were not related to CSNY. This makes even non-maniacs want to hear the genuine complete version of CSNY’s Woodstock, but it is hard to come by. Just when you think it’s finally here, it turns out to be a recording of the Greek Theater two weeks later, and maniacs are disappointed. Above all, it is difficult to leak if it is a multi-track recording. After many years of this frustrating situation, the release of a box set commemorating the 50th anniversary of the festival was realized, and finally the complete version of CSNY’s Woodstock was released. The excitement of finally getting the complete version of Woodstock, which was an unfulfilled dream for enthusiasts, was fleeting, but the box set was an extremely limited release and expensive. It was hard to say that it was easy to get. On the contrary, only a few of them were released in Japan, so even though the complete version of Woodstock was released, most people (especially Japanese people) were unable to hear it. So this time, we have excerpted the CSNY part from a rare and turbulent set that was released in recent years. Needless to say, it is a multi-track recording, so it is of super high quality. Most people will be surprised that the legendary CSNY complete version of Woodstock was quietly released in the best form three years ago. It feels like a different era when you think about how it has been released in small doses for a long time, such as the soundtrack and the Woodstock 25th anniversary box set. The stage that opens with “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, which was also an impressive scene in the movie, is Woodstock itself. “Mr. Soul,” performed by just Young and Stephen Stills, was familiar to enthusiasts as a rare performance that could be heard on items other than the soundtrack, but this time it was mono, but it is a high-quality multi-track stereo. In addition, Young’s “Wonerlin'” was performed on the CSNY stage, especially at Woodstock, which surprised enthusiasts around the world, but now it can be heard. In addition, the band set with Dallas Taylor and Gregg Reeves was a parade of rare performances that had not been heard until now, and the second half of the live performance, which had been shrouded in mystery for a long time, finally came to light. Nash’s “Pre-Road Downs,” which became the opening of the band set in their subsequent live performances, is a very fresh performance, and it even seems like a different group from the take of “FOUR WAY STREET” a year later. The arrangement of “Bluebird Revisited,” which was later included in Stills’ second album, was already completed, and it is very valuable to hear it performed live as CSNY. It was also one of the representative repertoires of their live performances in 1969. And it is a genuine live take of “Sea Of Madness” at Woodstock. It is true that the performance is rougher than the version at Fillmore included in the movie soundtrack, but as Crosby and Nash explained on stage, this was their second live performance (however popular they were, they accepted it, which was surprising…). The rough performance is what makes it so appealing. The day has come when you can hear their stage performance at Woodstock, full of their freshness, in perfect sound quality. The quality is not inferior to the later live album “FOUR WAY STREET”. Along with the huge best-selling Jimi Hendrix “THE COMPLETE WOODSTOCK 1969”, this is the best document from the event that symbolizes 1969. This is a historic piece that I would like to recommend to all music fans, not just enthusiasts! Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York, USA 18th August 1969 STEREO SBD (71:44) 1. Intro 2.
