Description
For David Coverdale, it was an “ideal collaboration”, for Jimmy Page, it was “a long-awaited display of talent”, and for rock fans, it was a “dream collaboration”. COVERDALE/PAGE was a project that was full of memories for both the performers and the audience. Now, the superb live album is here. The century’s collaboration shook the rock world, and even though the album “COVERDALE/PAGE” reached number 4 in the UK and number 5 in the US, the US tour was canceled due to poor ticket sales. The only time the live stage was realized was in Japan in December 1993. We have reported on the masterpiece live albums in our shop, so let’s start by looking at the overview.・December 14th: Nippon Budokan “KNEES AND PRAY” ・December 15th: Nippon Budokan [this work] – 1 day move & off- ・December 17th: National Yoyogi Stadium ・December 18th: National Yoyogi Stadium – 1 day move & off- ・December 20th: Osaka Castle Hall “PRIDE & JOY” ・December 21st: Osaka Castle Hall ・December 22nd: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium “OVER NOW” A total of 7 performances. This work includes the second performance, “December 15th, 1993: Nippon Budokan”. At the time, there was an unprecedented bootleg boom, and Paige’s first visit to Japan in a long time combined to produce a record of all the performances, but this work is not a copy or remaster. It is a master released very recently by “KRW_CO”, and is extremely elegant, awakened from the 1st generation of the original cassette. In fact, the sound is really wonderful. Although it is not a “soundboard-like” type, the extremely thick and clear musical tones give almost no sense of distance, and all the instruments reach vividly. Particularly great are the essential vocals and guitar. Of course, the on-site PA focuses on the two main characters, accurately recording that balance. On top of that, you can also enjoy Brett Tuggle’s electric piano, which often rolls, and Denny Carmassi’s groovy drumming. The “combination of the century” depicted by that sound. As a Japanese person, some people perceived it as “PURPLE singer + ZEP guitar,” but the reality is “White Snake + ZEP.” Moreover, the weight is much more on the ZEP side. Although the band members are of the WHITESNAKE lineage, the White Snake repertoire is limited to only three songs, and the ZEP-like “COVERDALE PAGE” was full of 11 songs and 8 songs, as well as ZEP numbers. In fact, Coverdale, who loves Paige, and Paige, who is at the “I’ll go out with you” level, show their passion exactly, but this choice was a great choice. Most of Coverdale’s fans were more interested in “how Coverdale sings ZEP, which he admires,” than “how Paige plays White Snake,” and Paige’s fans are exploding with the feeling of “it’s been a long time!” or “finally!”. It’s clear that they are surprised and delighted by the “ZEP number played by the real thing” in this work. This is also true of the performance. Paige somehow takes a solo in the WHITESNAKE number (even in “Still Of The Night” he throws a fast solo: lol), while Coverdale dramatically sings ZEP while repeatedly using his proud high tones like Plant (it’s “WHITESNAKE’s Coverdale” instead of “PURPLE’s”). I’m not sure if I’m praising him or not, but that’s why COVERDALE/PAGE is so great. Coverdale, who achieved great success with WHITESNAKE despite being called a “ZEP clone,” loves the ZEP sound so much that even “RESTLESS HEART,” which was not aimed at a hit, included a ZEP-like song. He fulfilled his “dream” on par with the real Page. Even though he is a veteran singer, he is open about his respect and joy, which is why Page was able to respond honestly with “ZEP sound at full throttle.” This is what makes him fundamentally different from THE FIRM. The band and the audience at the scene are enjoying the fruits of that to their heart’s content. 24 years have passed since this dream. It is precisely because of this that this honesty is dazzling. There is no acoustic, no oriental arrangement, and no orchestra here. LED ZEPPELIN was packed with various elements, but at the same time it was also a hard rock band. This work is packed with a sound that extracts and condenses only “hard rock” from such ZEP. He throws it out without any hesitation or hesitation, and even adds a lot of rich ZEP-like new songs, shaking the Nippon Budokan hard. At the time, he was said to be “a Plant imitation” or “his hands are like Doraemon’s”, but to today’s ears, it is made clear how grand and luxurious it was. This is the most refreshing Paige music since ZEP broke up. Live at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan 15th December 1993 PERFECT SOUND Disc 1 (63:43) 1. Intro 2. Absolution Blues 3. Slide It In 4.
