Description

Tributes to Chick Corea have surrounded the music scene since the news of his death on February 9th. The ultimate live album, which can be called the decisive blow, is now available. What is infused into this work is the “July 9, 1978 Los Angeles performance” held jointly with Herbie Hancock. It is a transcendental audience recording. Some of you may be thinking, “Huh?” at this date. Yes, it’s that show that was shown on the jazz specialty channel “Jazz³+” just last night, and is currently attracting a lot of attention. You might be thinking, “Is this the latest distribution on CD?”, but that’s actually not the case. This work is a superb live album that emerged from the original master excavation project of that legendary master Mike Millard. In fact, I am writing this article before the release of “Jazz³+”, but judging from the sample released in advance, it is definitely a mirrored recording. Since the main story has not been distributed yet, I cannot confirm the genealogy, but this work is definitely mastered by the prestigious “JEMS”. Physically, it is the highest version that cannot be defeated by the latest distribution. I’ve been calling it “distribution/distribution”, but in reality, this work is a super quality product that stands out even in the Mirrored Collection. After all, “JEMS” who is in charge of the excavation praises it highly. “I’ve been listening to Millard’s sound on a daily basis these days, and this time it’s really great.” “It’s close to the standard of official releases.” “It’s a great pleasure for fans of Corea and Hancock, and for fans of Millard. It’s worth listening to just for the sheer splendor of the sound,” “It’s just the magic of juicy sound,” and so on, and so on, so many compliments that you might mistake for our store’s info. Of course, there is no lie in those words. As you can imagine from the fact that “Jazz³+” is so clearly released, the sound has no sense of distance (at all), and the direct feel of the core and the clarity of the details are almost atmospheric. I can’t feel your presence. I wonder if it was really recorded in the audience seats, or if a microphone was actually attached to the piano… such a sense of close contact. It is a vivid sound that can be heard confidently by general jazz fans who do not even know that the method of “audience recording” exists. What is depicted with such ultimate sound is not only the sparkling piano improvisation of two geniuses… Speaking of live albums featuring the two of them, the official traditional albums “An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea: In Concert” and “CoreaHancock” come to mind, but this work is completely different. In order to explain its meaning, let’s organize the structure of the show here. Duo section (early part)・Someday My Prince Will Come/Homecoming Band section・CRYSTAL SILENCE: Crystal Silence・THE LEPRECHAUN: Night Sprite・MY SPANISH HEART: Day Danse/Spanish Fantasy・THE MAD HATTER: Mad Hatter Rhapsody/Falling Alice・Gail Moran: I Loved You Then, I Love You Now… and it goes like this. Just by looking at the songs, the repertoire is completely different, but even more so is the composition and ensemble. At the beginning of the show, only the two of them play “Someday My Prince Will Come” and “Homecoming”, but the piano duo ends there. “Night Sprite”, which began with a set change and MC, began a band concert that included strings, horns, and vocals. Moreover, the ensemble is fierce. The members of the same year’s solo album “SECRET AGENT” are brought in almost exactly as they were, and their supple performance and enthusiasm are as wonderful as RETURN TO FOREVER. We will be able to listen to plenty of big songs such as “Mad Hatter Rhapsody”, “Crystal Silence”, and “Spanish Fantasy”, as well as the title song from Chic’s wife Gail Moran’s solo work. You can enjoy a wide and colorful full show that is not just a collaboration between Corea and Hancock. This is Mike Millard’s masterpiece, which is a masterpiece of the prestigious “JEMS” and has even been officially released. There is no doubt that it was discovered now that the news of Chick’s death has been written, but the sounds and performances packed into this work are more than just a memorial album. Chick fans, Harvey fans, Millard fans…it doesn’t matter who you are picking it up for. This is a “new masterpiece of jazz” that has surpassed the distinction between official and unofficial. Superb audience recording of “July 9, 1978 Los Angeles Performance”. An extremely exquisite item that stands out even in the collection of legendary master Millard. JEMS himself, who is in charge of the excavation, praised the album without hesitation, saying, “I listen to mirrored recordings on a daily basis, but this time it’s really amazing,” “It’s the standard for official works,” and “It’s just the magic of juicy sound.” Furthermore, the sound is so good that it has even been officially distributed to the public by a jazz specialty channel. The show also featured a piano duo with only the opening two songs, and after “Night Sprite” it was a band concert that included strings, horns, and vocals. Although it is completely official quality, you can enjoy a colorful co-starring show that is completely different from the official work.
