Description

Chick Corea and the best technicians of the time, Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez, and Steve Gadd, performed a historic project to play serious straight-ahead jazz with the Three Quartets, and this is the first time that this legendary live performance with the same members was released in the highest quality! The masterpiece “Three Quartets” was recorded at Chick’s Mad Hatter Studio in Los Angeles in January and February 1981. The album was released in July. This work is a treasured album that contains the complete recording of the transcendent live performance held by the same four members as the recording on March 18, 1981 at Tor’s Place in New Haven, Connecticut, immediately after the recording, with the label’s own careful mastering, and the superb high-quality sound that makes you feel like you’re listening in the front row of the venue, over the course of an hour and a half! There is a reason why this work is called a “treasure.” Those who remember the state of the music scene at that time will understand, but these four, especially Michael and Gadd, were so popular in all genres that they were so busy that they had no time to sleep, and there are almost no records of the four of them actually performing together live, and no recordings have ever been released until now. This is the first time that a live recording of the “Original Three Quartets” has been released!! This performance, which was held before the album was released, included three songs from the original album “Quartet No. 1-3” (from which the title “Three Quartets” was taken), but all of the songs were performed in a much longer version than the studio version. No matter where you listen, you’ll be led by a powerful and gorgeous piano that is none other than Chick, and Michael’s tenor, which is comparable to Coltrane’s Sheets of Sound, explodes. Inspired by this, Chick also develops a sharp solo, and then there is a bass solo that fully shows off the incredible technique of Gomez, who was said to be the best at the time, and Gadd’s virtuoso solo, and from the very beginning, a tense and thrilling performance! And finally, “Quartet No. 2”, the highlight of the album “Three Quartets”, appears. Part 1 of this two-part number is dedicated to Duke Ellington, and it’s very pleasant to see Chick and the other members seriously competing with jazz. Part 2, dedicated to John Coltrane, features Michael’s fiery, overwhelming tenor, a performance that leaves you speechless, worthy of succeeding Coltrane. Michael’s amazingness here is extraordinary. The performance here easily surpasses the studio version! The rhythm section, consisting of the ultra-technical Gadd, who was the most powerful at the time, and the extremely technical Gomez, who is said to be the fastest bass player in the world, is just amazing throughout the entire album! Chick and Michael, who respond with devilish playing as if they are being fueled by that, are so amazing that they are impossible to handle! From then on, the intense performance continues with “Mirror Mirror” and other songs. There is no time to breathe from start to finish, and this is a very precious “original” Three Quartet masterpiece, which is making its world debut, full of communication through spectacular improvisation that is only possible with this group of members, and the speedy, refreshing, perfect ensemble!
