Description

From the 1972 masterpiece “Crystal Silence” that left its mark on jazz history to 2012’s “Hot House”, Chick Corea and Gary Burton are the best duo, having produced albums, performed live, and won Grammys many times over the course of 50 years. Unfortunately, Gary’s retirement announcement in 2017 put an end to their activities, and Chick passed away, so we will no longer be able to hear these two perform together…but this beautiful performance is here for the first time! ! The two, who created music in various styles, from solo, duo, trio, group, and big band, acoustic to electric, jazz, rock, classical, and Latin, first met on stage in Germany in 1972. Manfred, the young founder of ECM, immediately rushed to the dressing room and eagerly requested to record the masterpiece “Crystal Silence” in 1973. Starting with that, the duo’s activities that continued for 50 years can no longer be heard due to Gary’s retirement and Chick’s death… A must-listen album has arrived, recorded on a high-quality soundboard with careful mastering by the label, of a beautiful live performance by the duo of Chick and Gary at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival held at the Melbourne Concert Hall in Australia on January 22 (23?) 2000! ! The concert features “Native Sense,” “Love Castle,” “Duend,” “No Mystery,” and “Bud Powell” from the duo’s most recent work at the time, “Native Sense,” released in 1997. Throughout the album, the improvisations are incorporated into the group as if they were reviving the heat of jam sessions in the heyday of modern jazz, but the perfectly synchronized ensemble allows you to hear the essence of duo performance! Chick’s piano playing is as gorgeous as ever, and Burton’s amazing technique with four (or more) mallets. Surprisingly, both of them have improved their performance with age, and their powerful and lively performance is overwhelming! They sometimes play high-speed passages as if competing with each other, exchange phrases as if conversing with sound, and the quietness is filled with a terrifying tension and delicate lyricism that resonates crystal-clearly. This is exactly what ECM claims as the “next most beautiful sound to silence”. Enjoy this duo’s unique performance!
