Description

The 1978 Japan tour was a historic one for Cheap Trick and for Japanese rock fans. Cheap Trick’s popularity in Japan preceded their US debut, and then they were imported back to the US, becoming a global hit, so Japanese fans will have a special feeling for them. Following their first visit to Japan in 1978, they performed in Japan again the following year in 1979. Then in 1980, they performed in Japan for the third year in a row. This year, Cheap Trick’s Japan tour was not a regular tour, but an appearance at an event called JAPAN JAM 2, with only three performances, two at Yokohama Stadium and one in Kobe. The first JAPAN JAM was held in 1979 in Enoshima and Kyoto, and this year’s was the second, so the “2” is attached to it. The performers were a diverse lineup, including Southern All Stars, who had just debuted, Kalapana (who released a live album from this festival), Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Cheap Trick as the main act. At the time, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was very popular in the US, while Cheap Trick was still considered a new band, so it is said that the Atlanta crowd was surprised by the reversal in popularity between Cheap Trick and themselves in Japan. This work is a complete recording of Cheap Trick’s performance at Yokohama Stadium on August 16, 1980, the first day of JAPAN JAM 2. As it was a festival stage, the set list was short at just under an hour and a half with 17 songs in total, but the fans were captivated by a set list different from the previous two Japan visits, including songs from “Dream Police” and “Day Tripper” by The Beatles, which were performed for the first time in Japan. Of the 17 songs, 12 are soundboard recordings and 5 are audience recordings that were performed for the first time, making this a complete recording of the stage. What is particularly interesting is that the songs are played one after another in medley format. The breathtaking performance, which starts immediately after “Hello There” with “Clock Strikes Ten,” “I’ll Be With You Tonight,” and “Southern Girls,” gives a different impression from the previous stage. Also, there are many highlights, such as “Voices,” which usually starts with an electric set, but this time it starts with an acoustic guitar. This is a complete recording of Cheap Trick’s stage from the first day of JAPAN JAM 2, which was held on August 16, 1980 at Yokohama Stadium, which was the home of the Taiyo Whales at the time. Of the 17 songs, 12 are recorded on soundboards and 5 are recorded with the first audience sound source. YOKOHAMA STADIUM, YOKOHAMA KANAGAWA August 16, 1980 01. Introduction 02.
