Description

The live sound source released at the same time as this Nashville session is also a vintage time, Lakeland performance on the first day of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976. The same Rolling Thunder Review also said that in 1976, the size of the venue where the concert was held was larger than the previous year, so it was difficult to secure a good position for the taper, and the quality of the audience recordings that were on the market was not good. There are quite a few things. Among these, Lakeland has been popular among enthusiasts as one of the few excellent sound sources. The sound image has a good sense of distance, is recorded in monaural, and the clear sound quality is very easy to listen to. It is true that it has not reached the level of an honor student audience that can be described as “like a soundboard”, but it does not mean that there is an excessive vintage feeling, rather the freshness etc. are in the audience recording of this tour. It definitely reigns at the top. Even though it was expanded to the main arena from 1976, the fact that there were almost no noisy customers around the sound source on this day may also play a role in the ease of listening. In addition to these favorable conditions, this sound source was considered one of the best sound sources in 1976 in that the best version digitized from the master tape was available among traders from an early stage. Twenty years ago, an item called “UN1976TITLED” based on this master sound source was released, and it was highly praised by enthusiasts due to the good condition of the original sound source. However, “UN1976TITLED” (hereinafter referred to as “already released edition”) had a major drawback. It is said that during the opening “Visions Of Johanna”, digital noise was mixed in at a considerably noticeable level. This is unthinkable in today’s world where downloading from the internet is the mainstream, but in the late 1990s, when pre-release records were released, sound source trading via DAT tapes was the mainstream. However, this DAT was a deviant, and it was easy for small error noises to occur. Therefore, regarding the previously released editions, once the original sound source was in the hands of the label, it was released with the noise peculiar to DAT mixed in. Even though the precious 1976 Rolling Thunder Revue first day stage was recorded with good sound quality, it was ruined due to such damage. This was a regrettable mistake because if there were no such troubles, it would have certainly reigned as a masterpiece. Even in the 21st century, the noisy versions from the late 1990s are still being burned onto CD-Rs by traders, making the situation worse. It can be said that it was an unfortunate sound source that not only the previously released version but also the sound source itself was not in a good copy condition and was overlooked. A few years ago, clean copies of the master tape without digital noise finally began to circulate among traders. This has created a situation where we can release the new version of Lakeland that enthusiasts all over the world have been waiting for, and 2021 marks the 45th anniversary of the Rolling Thunder Revue in 1976. Therefore, an overseas enthusiast restored the existing audience recording of the 1976 Thunder Revue from end to end and uploaded it on the internet. First of all, it is natural that it is based on a clean copy that does not contain digital noise during “Visions Of Johanna”. “UN1976TITLED” had a low input level and an overall thin sound quality, but this time it is wonderful that it has been adjusted to a warmer sound quality. Even more than that, they carefully restored the condition where the sound quality deteriorated in the last three songs, reducing the discomfort. This has an uplifting feel that you can understand at first listen. And since this day is the first day of the 1976 tour, there are many highlights. Even though it has only been four months since the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue stage, the overall sound and live atmosphere have changed completely. From the opening, it is a rare beginning with “Visions Of Johanna” played by Dylan, and the following “If You See Her, Say Hello” was the live premiere on this day and is a version played by Dylan. He probably thought from the beginning that he would start the 1976 stage with his own singing. This day is already markedly different from last year’s Thunder Review, but the song selection after the singing session has also been changed significantly. In addition, on this day only, they played a cover of Hank Williams’ “Weary Blues From Waitin'” (the only performance to date), but at this point, the first half of the live had a strong country flavor, and the tour It doesn’t have the intensity that was heard in the later live album “HARD RAIN” which was recorded towards the end. Rather, it is interesting that it is dominated by a laid-back atmosphere. Another characteristic of 1976 was that Dylan played the (not very good) slide guitar on songs such as this song and “I Threw It All Away”. RAIN” was mixed modestly, but here you can also see the sound of his slide reverberating through the Lakeland venue (lol). In the second half of the live performance, “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” was performed for the first time on the Thunder Revue stage, but it ended up being performed only a few times because it didn’t look good on stage. What’s more, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” is currently being played in the arrangement of the 1975 version of Thunder Revue, and although it incorporates new innovations, it is still an excellent audience album that captures the first day of the 1976 tour, when shadows of the previous year were still flickering. . Finally, two valuable songs from the Pensacola performance 10 days later are included as bonus tracks. “Just Like A Woman”, which was released in 1976 and is a valuable piece to sing and play, was previously included in a compilation called “ACOUSTIC THUNDER”, but the sound quality is better than that, and it is the oldest song. “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again”, a live performance of “Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again”, is now available on CD for the first time!
