This two-disc set features 43 takes of 18 songs recorded at Columbia Recording Studios in New York on November 20th and 22nd, 1961, to celebrate the release of Bob Dylan’s legendary first album. This world-first CD release features master reels from sessions recorded on the 20th, featuring 23 takes of nine songs: “She’s Not Good,” “Dying,” “My Ex-Friend,” “Talking About New York,” “House of the Rising Sun,” “Song for Woody,” “Take Me Out,” “Always Sad,” and “Staring at Death.” Disc 2 features 20 takes of nine songs recorded on the 22nd: “Man on the Street,” “Ramblin’ Round,” “Always Sad,” “Pretty Peggy Ow,” “Clean My Grave,” “Gospel Plow,” “Highway 51,” “Freight Train Blues,” and “House Carpenter.” This stunning recording includes the countdown of each take, as well as conversations between Dylan and John Hammond in between. John Hammond’s “great” comment during the official Dylan performance speaks volumes.
