Description

BLACK SABBATH’s first big stage from the “BORN AGAIN” tour with Ian Gillan on vocals, the stage at the Reading Festival in the UK on August 27, 1983, was set with high-quality audience recording and FM sound source, and is a must-have for Gillan and SABBATH fans! The Reading Festival this year took place for three days from August 26 to 28, and especially on the final day, the 28th, there was a legendary performance by THIN LIZZY, which was effectively a disbanding show, and it is still talked about among British rock fans today. SABBATH also seemed to be putting in a lot of effort as a band to headline the second day of the traditional festival, and prior to the release of the album, they started their tour from Oslo, Norway on August 18, 1983, and performed a total of five shows up to Reading, warming up and touring around Scandinavia, and after careful preparation, they took on the de facto “Gillan SABBATH debut stage” in the UK. In this work, Disc 1 and Disc 2 contain audience recordings that are almost completely recorded from the opening to the show end, and Disc 3 contains FM sound sources by BBC recording, which is well known to fans as a standard, so you can enjoy this historic show at an unprecedented volume. The audience recordings recorded on Disc 1 and Disc 2 were already recorded under the title “SMOKE ON THE WATER” more than 10 years ago. This title, which is rarely seen nowadays, is said to be traded at high prices among some enthusiasts. In this work, the sound source that was the basis of “SMOKE ON THE WATER” was raised from a newly excavated high-level master tape, and was turned into a sound record after treatment and remastering. The clarity and visibility of the sound are superb sound quality that you will be convinced of the moment you hear the intro “Supertzar”, and it gives off the freshness of a show that was held just the other day. The sense of realism backed by the clarity is also wonderful, and if you play this sound source in a well-organized playback environment, you are guaranteed to fall into the illusion of being mixed into the Reading audience. That’s why it seems that the audience noise is a little noticeable, but that is mainly between songs, and when the performance starts, the surrounding audience also concentrates on the band’s play, and the applause and cheers become a moderate “sound effect”. The band’s performance is also recorded in detail with a three-dimensional and metallic edge sound image of Iommi’s guitar, and Geezer Butler’s bass and Bev Bevan’s drums are captured with a sound that is easy to hear, which is hard to believe at an outdoor festival. Even considering the band sound as a whole, this sound source is a material that can be ranked particularly high even during SABBATH’s ’83 tour. The other main character, Gillan, overwhelms everything he listens to with his outstanding presence from “Children Of The Grave”. “Hot Line”, which starts with a crazy scream at the beginning, is particularly amazing, and everyone will be captivated by the way he rocks lightly with a speedy development and makes hot shouts and screams at key points. In contrast, the heavy “War Pigs” features a large-scale staging and singing that is typical of a big name, and the new song “Born Again” eccentrically sings a gloomy and destructive worldview, so it’s hard to describe how amazing Gillan was on this day! Bev, who joined from E.L.O. before the start of the tour to replace Bill Ward, who dropped out only after recording, uses her inherent technical skills to play “Supernaut” and the solo that follows it, as well as this year’s unique “Rock’N’Roll Doctor”, which is like another original play that is not inferior to Bill. Unfortunately, there is a tape change-like cut at the beginning of “Disturbing The Priest”, but you can hear Gillan’s song from the beginning. This song, with its SABBATH-like heaviness and Iommi’s bare metallic guitar, and Gillan’s frenzied singing, is a major highlight of this work. “Keep It Warm,” located at the end of Disc 1, will be dropped shortly after this, so this take, which can be enjoyed with clear sound, is valuable. The second half of the live performance is highlighted by a heavy and long medley that goes from “Zero The Hero” to Iommi’s guitar solo and then to “Digital Bitch.” The super-heavy riffs and song developments here present a heaviness that is impossible for anyone other than SABBATH, and the listener can only writhe in agony. Also, as noted on several fan sites, the vocal take of “Digital Bitch” is completely different from the FM sound source that can be heard on Disc 3, and it is fun to compare the two while guessing the behind-the-scenes circumstances of the broadcast. In general terms, it seems that fans were disappointed with “Smoke On The Water” played by SABBATH, but the festivities around the taper that began the moment this “world’s most famous riff” started on this sound source were very positive, proving the correctness of Iommi’s aim to set the song as “this song is what Gillan is all about”. This sound source can be said to be a major proof of that. From the opening to the show end, you can enjoy the festival’s unique, passionate show with the highest realism for about 94 minutes. The songs that were cut from the FM sound source are also worth listening to, but you will be able to enjoy the other parts from a different perspective than before, with fresh excitement! Disc 3 contains the familiar FM sound source as the definitive version of this ’83 Reading sound source from the soundboard master. The sound source released simultaneously with “CAPTURED ALIVE DEFINITIVE EDITION” has been remastered to steadily upgrade to a more listenable sound. The overall sound has been tightened and the bass range adjusted to improve the sound clarity. This is the best version! The first song, “Hot Line,” was recorded in the audience, and the hotness that you could get burned by touching it remains the same, but the mix is full of the official feeling of a broadcast sound source and is easy to listen to, allowing you to enjoy this historic live performance even more deeply. Although it is a shortened version of 51 minutes because it is a broadcast sound source, the key points of the live performance that you want to listen to are firmly captured, and Gillan’s singing is also a long-time band, such as the scream at the end of “War Pigs” and the vulgar and evil demon king in “Black Sabbath,” which is the opposite of his predecessor Ronnie, and the familiar songs are dyed with Gillan’s taste. “Digital Bitch,” which Gillan was unable to properly reproduce in the audience recording, has been replaced with a different sound source in this FM broadcast, and it is also a great listening point to hear his smooth singing voice. For SABBATH fans, this work is a perfect sample to compare this song. The audience recording of “Iron Man” has a slightly strong sound input, but you can enjoy it again with a well-balanced and easy-to-listen-to sound. It is no exaggeration to say that the live take of the encore “Smoke On The Water” and “Paranoid” surpasses the classic soundboard “CAPTURED ALIVE”. Following “Smoke On The Water”, where the audience’s chorus of loud cheers and joyful voices dominates the entire venue, the spectacular energy that explodes in “Paranoid” never gets old no matter how many times you listen to it. In particular, the scene in the first half of “Paranoid”, where the cheers respond to Gillan’s scream with “Oh! Year!!”, should be said to be a decisive scene in the history of SABBATH and the long history of the Reading Festival! Surprisingly, this was the only live performance in the UK for SABBATH in 1983, but that one performance was legendary, so it was a live performance that was more memorable than the record, and was typical of Gillan SABBATH. This work is a set of a legendary night deeply engraved in the history of Reading, completed with high-quality audience recording and the classic FM sound source.
