Description

During the “BORN AGAIN” era, BLACK SABBATH, who had parted company with Ronnie James Dio, unexpectedly joined forces with Ian Gillan. This work is often criticized by die-hard maniacs who say “Ozzy is Sabbath” and fans who support the melodious sound of the post-Ronnie era, but the album’s extremely heavy sound and “different This is also an era in which it is gaining enthusiastic support from enthusiasts who love “clash of personalities.” Gilan Sabbath’s live performance is even more interesting than the album. For the tour, the lineup has become a kind of “super band”, with former E.L.O. member Bev Bevan joining in. The lineup even performed “Smoke On The Water.” Moreover, since there are no official live works, I think there are many people who have stepped into the world of collector’s items because of the desire to listen to this live performance. This work “NEVER AGAIN” includes two performances from the early stages of the tour and a live performance in the United States from the time of “BORN AGAIN” in 1983, both of which are recorded by high-quality audience masters. This is a 5-disc set that fans who want to take a step forward from standard sound sources should enjoy. Disc 1 contains approximately 78 minutes of the Oslo, Norway performance on August 18, 1983, which was a memorable “first show” for Gilan Sabbath. Although the outline of the sound is sweet in the beginning, it is more than enough material for a recording made 30 years ago. Furthermore, it seems to have been recorded in a location close to the PA, allowing you to enjoy the band’s musical sounds with a direct sound image. During the ’83 tour, Gillan’s vocals were unstable on some days, but on this day he was in very good condition. As Gillan says, “I’m not a cover singer,” the album includes classic songs from the Ozzy era, including classics such as the opening song “Children Of The Grave” and “War Pigs,” as well as “Supernaut.” There are also hidden gems such as “Rock’n’Roll Doctor” that are worth listening to. This is also the first Sabbath live for Bev Bevan, who participated from the tour. He mixes in his own unique techniques while also showing off a percussive play that is similar to Bill Ward. The presence of Gillan and Bev (with the heavy mood of “BORN AGAIN”) has the feel of an upgrade from ’70s Sabbath. Even enthusiasts who think “Sabbath has to be heavy” will be very satisfied with this powerful heaviness. “Smoke On The Water”, which premiered at Sabbath, received great surprise and reaction from the audience. And in the last song “Paranoid”, Gilan’s character explodes! Although it is not a complete recording of the live performance, the spectacular performance, which is performed with the motivation unique to the first day of the tour, is full of listening pleasure that exceeds the sound quality. Discs 2 and 3 include approximately 90 minutes of the 4th performance in Sweden Rand on August 23rd from the ’83 Scandinavian tour. This has a better visibility than Disc 1, and the outline of the sound image is clear. Not only Gillan’s vocals but also Geezer’s bass are recorded loud. The powerful sound will let you fully enjoy the powerful performance of a successful band. This recording is a listening point from the beginning of the live performance where “Stonehenge” is used in the opening S.E. This instrumental was used for the opening only on the first four days of the tour (later on, it was replaced by the familiar “Supertzar”). This live was just before that “Reading Festival”, and the band’s voltage is high. Although the Oslo performance on Disc 1 was incompletely recorded, this work features the ability to check all the songs played. The framework of “new songs + Ozzy era” is still maintained, and although there are no songs from the Ronnie era, all songs from “BORN AGAIN” to “Trashed” are played (including instrumentals). The heavy ballad masterpiece “Born Again” and the rare “Keep It Warm” are great listens. “Hot Line”, “Disturbing The Priest”, and “Zero The Hero”, which are already becoming popular, will knock out the listener with a wave attack of power and heaviness! It’s really unfortunate that the last song “Paranoid” fades out after less than a minute because the tape ran out! Still, the value of this recording is great as you can enjoy many new songs in excellent condition. It can be said to be a representative sound source at the beginning of the tour. Discs 4 and 5 are sound sources from the American tour located in the latter half of the ’83 tour. This is an 85-minute recording of the live performance at “The Spectrum” in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, held on November 5th, the 17th performance of the North American tour. This performance is the day after that classic sound board sound source “CAPTURED ALIVE” (November 4th, Worcester performance). The sound board sound source was an incomplete version in which the middle part of the live was edited, but this one includes the entire version, of course. The mood and content of the live performance are similar, and it can be said that it is a recording that allows you to enjoy the full-length version of “CAPTURED ALIVE”, although it is pseudo. The recording is of high quality that can be said to be particularly high among the audience materials from the ’83 North American tour. It is also ideal for listening to and comparing the set changed from the European tour with the Oslo performance and Land performance. The opening is still the flow of “Children Of The Grave” and “Hot Line”, but “Iron Man”, which was in the second half, has been moved to the middle. Furthermore, the arrangement using “Stonehenge” in the introduction is profound and solemn, and became a feature of the 1983 American tour. Furthermore, “Heaven And Hell” from Ronnie’s era is also included in the set as a medley with “Zero The Hero”. The profound arrangement of the song is unique to this period. After the guitar solo, “Digital Bitch” is substituted for the scene where the tempo increases and becomes exciting, and Guillain’s worldview is maintained here as well. The Sabbath live set when Gillan was enrolled had a lot of changes, making it a particularly interesting era to listen to and compare. This work covers that ’83 live with rare sets and representative sets! Both high-quality masters will please enthusiasts.
