Description

It was exactly 50 years ago that the Beatles began working on a new album to follow up their “White Album.” This period was called the “Get Back Sessions,” and as a result of rehearsals and filming for the movie “LET IT BE,” which would be released later, the discord within the group that had surfaced during the production of the previous album was resolved. It became a document of a period of escalation. Although the production was progressing with such ups and downs, it was still the Beatles who managed to finish it off with a rooftop live performance. The Get Back Sessions was originally a project aimed at the return of the Beatles to live shows, but because they had become so big at the time, the idea of holding a live show never materialized. George not only temporarily left the group during rehearsals, but also rejected the idea of performing live. Although it was able to fit back into its original sheath, a live scene was absolutely necessary to conclude the ongoing recording and filming of the film. The guerrilla live performance on the Apple rooftop on January 30th was realized not only as a compromise solution but also because it had the advantage of being able to be put into action immediately. In the end, this was the Beatles’ last live performance, but half of the 40-minute live performance was featured in the movie “LET IT BE.” There are only three songs on the album of the same name. However, the entire story of the rooftop concert was revealed when a film crew working in the bootleg world excavated the sound source from Nagra’s monaural recorder. Thanks to this, we were able to hear the takes that weren’t included in the movie, and even the British national anthem and “I Want You” that John played in between. On the other hand, officially, “Get Back”, which was played last on “ANTHOLOGY 3”, was released as a stereo mix, and when the best album “1” was released, “Get Back” take 2 was newly created as a standalone MV. The audio at that time was also converted to stereo. The fact that the whole story was revealed in this way became an opportunity for enthusiasts to develop their next ambitions. That means I want to listen to the entire live performance in stereo. That said, there are limits to the sound sources that can be heard in stereo. Therefore, we have managed to create the best possible stereo version at present by pulling out not only the sound sources of each album, but also the audio of “Don’t Let Me Down” from the video version of “ANTHOLOGY”. That was “THE LAUNCH INTERRUPTION,” which was released by a person pretending to be a fake Purple Chick (confusing), disguised as a package for a live series released by the fan label Purple Chick. Other versions of this concept have also appeared online in recent years. It was written by coltturkey, a maniac known for “COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS”. In his “I HOPE WE’VE PASSED AUDITION”, a complete stereo audio recording of “Dig A Pony” was realized. This is an audio diversion from a version of the film released by the HMC label that was being worked on for release in 1992. In “THE LAUNCH INTERRUPTION”, the same song used the regular version of “LET IT BE”, but only the line of “All I Want Is You” that was cut there was patched with the camera crew sound source. This had the disadvantage that only that part became monaural. However, “I HOPE WE’VE PASSED AUDITION” also had a problem, and in order to alleviate the discomfort caused by using multiple sound sources, strong equalization was applied overall. Therefore, although this time’s content is close to the concept of “THE LAUNCH INTERRUPTION,” “Dig A Pony” is entirely in stereo, making it an edit that takes the best parts of items that appeared in the past. Furthermore, when reusing the same song from the HMC audio, we adjusted the balance of the left channel so that it can be enjoyed in a more stable state. However, we purposely cut out the various calls and exchanges of the camera crew before the rooftop live performance started and before the Beatles appeared, making it easier to listen to. Take 2 of each of “I’ve Got A Feeling” and “Don’t Let Me Down” was a performance that was only heard on the sound source of the film team, but in the 21st century, “LET IT BE…NAKED” At the time of editing, both songs were released as a combination of two takes. As a result, about half of the performance in both take 2 will have a stereo sound source. Therefore, these take 2 are a mix of the “LET IT BE…NAKED” part and the monaural sound source of the movie team. Naturally, there will be a mix of stereo and monaural in one song, but I was surprised at how beautiful the result was, making it surprisingly stress-free to listen to. The idea of a return to live performance after a long hiatus that Paul and the rest of the Beatles had originally envisioned did not materialize, so a last-ditch plan turned out to be a good idea: the rooftop live show. Furthermore, it is also the scene that led the getback session, which was the most difficult one, to a beautiful conclusion. Completely recorded, which will probably never be done officially in the future (exchanges between performances will definitely be cut), and edited to be recorded in stereo to the maximum extent possible, making it essentially the Beatles’ last live performance. We will faithfully reproduce the 40 minutes or so that ended up happening. It wasn’t a legendary night that happened 50 years ago…it was lunch!
