The TV station that aired “THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY” on New Year’s Eve aired the music video for “Free As A Bird,” a new song, one month prior, as a preview and promotion for their first album, “ANTHOLOGY 1.” This, too, evokes fond memories for fans who remember the excitement surrounding “THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY.” The broadcast aired during Japan’s most influential news program at the time, and viewers literally watched with bated breath as the music video debuted, capturing worldwide attention. However, because the program itself had nothing to do with music and only featured one music video, there are far fewer VHS recordings of this broadcast than the New Year’s Eve edition of “THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY.” This broadcast is now extremely rare.
