Description
The tour of the East Coast of the United States in June 1984, when Yngwie Malmsteen was still in the band, was an opening act for TED NUGENT. The live performances in New Jersey and New York were recorded with great audience masters, and this special release will be a package title for fans! The sound sources recorded in the first half of this work, from track 1 to track 7, are from a live performance held in Jackson, New Jersey on June 8, 1984. The performance feels quite close, and the brightness of the sound and the contours and separation of the performance are recorded at a high level. The remaster has returned the pitch, which was slow in the original master, to normal, and the bass, which was a bit muffled, has been corrected to a clear sound. Graham’s vocals and Yngwie’s guitar both have an outstanding presence, and you can fully enjoy the clashing performance of the two from “Too Drunk To Live, To Young To Die”. The entire live performance is about 35 minutes long, but it covers all the major songs from that time, such as the catchy taste of “Island In The Sun”, where keyboardist Jimmy Waldo’s playing makes you feel comfortable, the heart-warming “Hiroshima Mon Amour”, and the dramatic “Kree Nakoorie”. The cheers and chatter from the audience around the taper are a bit annoying between these songs, but the sound pressure of the play is high during the performance, so the listener can surprisingly concentrate on the songs the band is playing. The last song of the show is the RAINBOW number “Since You Been Gone”. Yngwie seems to be playing as he pleases, but the band ensemble is solid. This day was a stage performance at a festival, so it seems that ALCATRAZZ’s time is up to this point (after the performance of the song, background music plays, suggesting that the live show has ended). The sound source recorded in the latter half of this work, from track 8 to track 14, is a performance in New York on June 30, 1984. The sound image conveys the fact that it is a small venue, and the bass seems a little distorted, but the sound and brightness itself are quite good. The taper seems to have been recorded from a position close to the stage, and the sense of realism unique to a venue where the stage and the audience are close is wonderful. The raw power that is typical of a live tape will allow you to relive the ALCATRAZZ live at that time with all its juicy charm. This tape starts with “Jet To Jet”. The pitch was recorded high on the original master, but in the remastering process, the pitch was accurately adjusted along with the removal of noise, and the sound image has been polished to a greater sense of scale. Graham is also in very good condition, and the vocals that can be heard on “Jet To Jet” and “Kree Nakoorie” are full of wonderful power. This day was also Yngwie’s birthday, so the guitar solo part where he plays a birthday song for himself from around 4:10 is a great listening point! The familiar call-and-response between Graham and the audience is also heard on “All Night Long,” which was not heard at the live performance on the 8th, making this a short but very fulfilling recording. Unfortunately, the New York live performance is not a complete recording, but there are only a limited number of recordings known to this day from the ’84 US tour, especially the latter half of the live performance when Yngwie was still in the band, so both are definitely must-listens for fans. This work will also be important in examining the history of ALCATRAZZ, as it connects the main album “LIVE GAMES” with “NO PAROLE FROM MILWAUKEE,” which was recorded at the “Milwaukee Summer Festival” on the following July 7th.
