Description

This release captures the second night of the Glasgow show—part of the UK leg in December 1997—which took place just before the legendary G-MEX performance. That G-MEX show was a high-octane event where the band and audience fed off each other’s energy—Liam even declared, “I want to stay here all night!”—and this Glasgow show rivals it in quality. However, previous releases of this recording dated back nearly two decades and suffered from a somewhat distant, thin sound. Now, thanks to a thorough remaster and remix, it has been reborn with high-fidelity sound that makes it feel like an entirely new source! A new “must-hear” recording has arrived from the *Be Here Now* tour, the era that best encapsulates the magic of Oasis live performances. It is truly spectacular. December 1997 marked the absolute peak of the *Be Here Now* tour, a period beloved by hardcore fans. Given that this was the same time the definitive *Ultimate G-MEX 1997: Finest & Longest*—a recording that defines Oasis’s live output for the year—was produced, there was no chance of a bad show. The December 8th Glasgow concert being released here proves exactly that! Admittedly, the month began with turbulence: the Dublin show (immortalized in *Dublin 1997 Final Night: Remaster & Remix*) saw Noel taking over lead vocals to pull the band through, while the first Glasgow night ended abruptly when a bottle thrown from the crowd struck Bonehead. Yet, the December 8th show—this release—was a magnificent performance that completely redeemed the preceding events! The crowd’s enthusiasm is incredible right from the start; interestingly, rather than the usual Oasis sing-alongs, the fans are getting into the music with synchronized hand-clapping reminiscent of Japanese audiences (haha). The thunderous applause that erupts after every song is equally impressive. Given such an enthusiastic reception, it is no wonder the band wanted to respond with a passionate performance, putting the previous day’s mishaps behind them. Best of all, the audience recording from that day captures this fervor with exquisite balance. Neither the handclapping nor the roaring cheers drown out the music or assault the ears; instead, the recording offers a rich, immersive atmosphere that is a pleasure to listen to. It is no surprise that a recording capturing such a brilliant performance amidst such excitement was previously released under the title *SURPRISE, TENSION AND DANGER*. However, while the recording was easy to listen to, the sense of distance from the performance—feeling somewhat “far away”—was a drawback. Furthermore, that “Betrayer” label release came out nearly two decades ago. For this new release, we revisited the original source material and utilized cutting-edge AI technology to first separate the master recording into 11 distinct tracks (vocals, guitar, bass, hi-hat, cymbals, kick drum, snare, toms, piano, audience noise, and others). After remastering each track individually, we performed a remix modeled after the sound of the promotional CD for the band’s performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York—mixed by Owen Morris—from the same year. The result not only eliminates the sense of distance that was the recording’s biggest weakness but also perfectly corrects instabilities in volume and channel balance that were particularly noticeable during the opening track, “Be Here Now.” The excitement and the performance were always magnificent, but the distance of the sound image on previous releases made it a bit of a hurdle to listen to repeatedly. Even the most dedicated fans will find themselves wanting to listen to this version over and over again. It is a dramatic upgrade—a transformation that delivers flawless, high-quality sound. Listening with this clear, intimate sound image that brings you much closer to the stage, you are reminded once again just how incredible the performance was that day. It captures both the high-octane energy typical of 1997 and the relaxed confidence of a band riding a wave of enthusiastic, good-natured excitement. A prime example is the moment Noel teases the crowd by playing a snippet of “Shakermaker” before launching into “Supersonic.” Above all, Liam is in top form; his vocals remain flawless and effortless throughout the show, suggesting he is fine-tuning his condition for the upcoming massive G-MEX gig. The atmosphere is electric—fueled by a Glasgow crowd that stays frenzied from start to finish—and is further enhanced by this new remix. After wrapping up “Cigarettes & Alcohol” (which returned to the setlist with Liam on vocals for the first time in nearly a year), he even declares, “I wanna stay here all night!” This release strikes the perfect balance between a stellar performance and a wild crowd, establishing a new benchmark for 1997 tour recordings!
