Description
In 1983, Y&T was at the height of their popularity, releasing a string of historically significant masterpieces. Now, a soundboard album capturing one of those scorching hot club gigs has arrived. This album records their performance in Buffalo on October 27, 1983, using an FM soundboard recording. The broadcast itself has long been famous and a staple among collectors. This album features a new master that significantly surpasses the previous best recording. Before discussing the quality, let’s first look at the show’s position. 1983 was the year when the “BLACK TIGER Tour” and the “MEAN STREAK Tour” switched places. A slight difference in timing can change the meaning of the live performance itself, so let’s first check the schedule at the time. 1983 “BLACK TIGER Tour” – January 21st – April 12th: US #1 (9 shows) – June 11th: Santa Clara show “MEAN STREAK Tour” – July 9th: San Jose show – August 19th – November 11th: US #2 (29 shows) ←★HERE★ – November 19th – December 22nd: Europe (25 shows) – December 28th – 31st: US #3 (3 shows) 1984 – January 22nd: San Jose show “IN ROCK WE TRUST Tour” – June 11th – July 21st: US #4 (3 shows) – August 18th: Appearance at MONSTERS OF ROCK – August 24th – December 31st: US #5 (49 shows) The new master has been updated to the pinnacle of standard FM broadcasts. This is Y&T from 1983/1984. This Buffalo performance was part of the “MEAN STREAK Tour,” specifically “US #2.” While the recently released unearthed album “LIVE AT SHERWOOD HALL: SALINAS, CA 10/01/1983” from 1983 is still fresh in our memories, this album takes place approximately three weeks later (there are also theories suggesting the Buffalo performance was on October 21st or 22nd). This release, capturing that show, is a masterpiece of “official-level unearthed quality.” The new master was unearthed from the collection of the renowned collector “GManOF,” a familiar face at our store. Although specific generation information is unavailable, the sound is clearly upgraded. The rough texture that plagued the previous master has been completely eliminated, and there is no distortion or warping. While the mix balance is still typical of an FM broadcast, the rich, vibrant master quality permeates every detail. Indeed, Dave Meniketti’s guitar, with its trademark sustain, is smoother, and even the high-frequency harmonics resonate without being crushed. The twin guitar attacks with Joey Alves retain their sharpness even within the bandwidth limitations of FM broadcasting, and Phil Kennemore’s bass lines add a solid thickness to the mid-low frequencies. Leonard Hayes’ drumming, from the snare attack to the cymbal decay, now clearly reveals details that were often buried on previous recordings. This new, top-notch sound captures a legendary club gig that ends with a power outage, and showcases a selection of classic songs woven together by the band’s peak potential. While the content is tailored to the approximately one-hour broadcast slot, the selection is pleasantly different from the recent unearthed album, “LIVE AT SHERWOOD HALL.” Let’s compare and organize them here. Mean Streak (4 songs) – Hang’em High / Take You To The Limit / Midnight In Tokyo / Mean Streak Others (2 songs + 5 songs) – Earthshaker: I Believe In You / Hungry For Rock (★) – Black Tiger: Barroom Boogie / My Way Or The Highway (★) / Black Tiger (★) / Hell Or High Water / Forever (★) *Note: Songs marked with “★” were not included on the unearthed album ‘LIVE AT SHERWOOD HALL: SALINAS, CA 10/01/1983’. …and so on. I think the song selection/editing was done by the broadcasting station, but the repertoire centered around the two masterpieces ‘BLACK TIGER’ and ‘MEAN STREAK’ is particularly rich. The joy of experiencing four songs not found on “LIVE AT SHERWOOD HALL”—”My Way Or The Highway,” “Black Tiger,” “Forever,” and “Hungry For Rock”—in FM broadcast quality is an irreplaceable luxury. And what has become a legend unique to this album is the final track, “Hungry For Rock.” The performance cuts off abruptly and returns to the DJ’s narration, but this is not a recording error. In fact, Y&T caused a power outage at the venue, forcing a forced end after about two minutes. To think that even such an accident was broadcast… It is a rare and extremely valuable scene that you won’t see anywhere else. This is a top-notch live album that revives a classic FM broadcast with “official-level discovery” freshness. Meniketti’s guitar sings with richness, and the sharpness of the twin guitars shines through in every detail. This is a must-listen and must-have album that perfectly captures the raw energy of Y&T’s 1983 club gig, including the unexpected power outage. It’s an FM soundboard recording of the Buffalo performance on October 27, 1983. This is a top-of-the-line, updated master of the classic broadcast, unearthed from the collection of renowned collector “GManOF”. The roughness of previous releases has been completely eliminated, resulting in a wonderfully polished sound that is “official-quality unearthed,” and you can enjoy classic tracks like ‘EARTHSHAKER’, ‘BLACK TIGER’, and ‘MEAN STREAK’, as well as the unexpected power outage that forced the performance to end. 2001 Club, Buffalo, NY, USA 27th October 1983 UPGRADE!!
