Description
The legendary American program “The Midnight Special,” which left behind countless treasure trove footage, is releasing its Bay City Rollers special episode in the ultimate quality version. “The Midnight Special” was truly a legendary music program. Broadcast on NBC from August 1972 to March 1981, this late-night program featured rare footage of stars from the 70s. Combined with its unique program content, the archived footage is still considered a treasure trove today, making it a masterpiece of music variety. The most important point of this officially unearthed treasure trove of 70s footage is that it was primarily live performance. In the early 70s, mime was the norm for music programs. Live performances were avoided because they were time-consuming to record, prone to accidents, and unpredictable in terms of timing. Amidst this, “The Midnight Special” gained popularity by sticking to its own unique live performance format. This point became more and more important over time, resulting in a large amount of brilliant footage of artists who were at their peak in the 70s. This legendary program is now, 50 years later, once again in the spotlight. The reason is the discovery of a top-quality master recording. The program’s official channel has begun releasing archive footage one after another. And the quality is astonishing! As it is the original master recording held by the program’s own collection, it is more beautiful than any master recording known until now. Of course, the lighting and sets have the feel of the 70s, but the zero degradation and freshness make it beautiful as if 50 years had never passed. 67 minutes of a star-studded cast, hosted by the BAY CITY ROLLERS Among this much-talked-about unearthed series, this particular release is “Episode 230,” which aired on “August 12, 1977.” It is a DVD of a special episode hosted by the BAY CITY ROLLERS. While the BAY CITY ROLLERS are the main focus, other performers such as Jimmy Webb and England Dan & John Ford Coley also appear. You can enjoy approximately 67 minutes of precious live footage (plus more) of 15 songs. The program features various artists performing songs on a rotating basis, but let’s organize them here. BAY CITY ROLLERS (4 songs) – Melody Dedicated to Youth: Yesterday’s Hero – Love Game: You Made Me Believe In Magic / It’s A Game / Love Fever First up is BAY CITY ROLLERS, who also serve as the hosts of this program. This program aired the month after the release of “Love Game.” Their appearance was for promotional purposes, and they mainly performed three songs from their new album, along with their previous lead single, “Yesterday’s Hero.” Although they performed relatively few songs for hosts, they appeared frequently to introduce each artist. Their TV-savvy comments and hosting style are truly befitting of a world-class idol group of our time. Jimmy Webb (6 songs) – El Mirage: Mixed-Up Guy / The Highwayman – Others: Wichita Lineman / By The Time I Get To Phoenix / Worst That Could Happen / MacArthur Park But even more featured than the Bay City Rollers was Jimmy Webb. Usually, the host artist performs the most songs on “The Midnight Special,” but in this episode, a special segment for Webb was set up in the middle, and he performed six songs, surpassing the host. At the time, Webb had released his sixth solo album, “El Mirage,” about three months prior. He performed not only new songs “Mixed-Up Guy” and “The Highwayman,” but also many of his representative songs that he had written for various artists. This is a magnificent selection that showcases just how many great songs have been produced, including Glen Campbell’s hits “Wichita Lineman” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” Brooklyn Bridge’s single “Worst That Could Happen,” and Richard Harris’s “MacArthur Park.” Other tracks (5 songs + α) include: England Dan & John Ford Coley: It’s Sad To Belong/Soldier In The Rain, KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND: Keep It Comin’ Love, Roger Daltrey: One Of The Boys (PV), ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA: Telephone Line, and Hoyt Axton: a special re-edited segment. This episode focuses on the BAY CITY ROLLERS and Jimmy Webb, with the rest being a bit of a mix. England Dan & John Ford Coley from the ‘DOWDY FERRY ROAD’ era have two tracks, but the others each have one. Roger Daltrey’s music video is shown, and Hoyt Axton has a lengthy feature segment re-edited from past appearances, but KC & the Sunshine Band and the Electric Light Orchestra offer their own unique live performances. When you think of ELO in 1977, you might think of ‘Out of the Blue,’ but at the time it was still on the verge of release. Here they perform “Telephone Line” from their previous album. This is a treasure trove of 15+ tracks from this diverse lineup. The Bay City Rollers, in the heyday of idols, host the show with their seasoned TV skills, Jimmy Webb shows off his songwriting prowess with a six-track feature, and you can also enjoy live scenes from KC & the Sunshine Band and ELO. It’s about 67 minutes that condenses the brilliance of “1977.” The legendary music program “The Midnight Special” episode featuring the Bay City Rollers has been released on DVD using the ultimate quality officially unearthed master. Hosted by the Bay City Rollers during their “Game of Love” era, this approximately 67-minute treasure trove of footage also features six songs by Jimmy Webb, KC & the Sunshine Band, ELO, and more.
