Description
Mike Millard and Barry Goldstein, two great tapers who left a huge mark on the history of recording in the 1970s, were also friends. Now, a masterpiece live album of Genesis has been released, combining the designs of these two. This album features a recording of their performance at Inglewood on March 24, 1977, in superb audience quality. While we cover the entire career of Genesis, Steve Hackett’s final color tour, the “Wind & Wuthering Tour,” is a particularly competitive area for excellent recordings. As part of organizing our collection, let’s first take a look at the overview of their activities at the time and explore the show’s place within that context.・January 1st-23rd: UK (20 shows) ← *SOUTHAMPTON 1977 ・February 2nd-May 1st: North America (44 shows) ← ★HERE★ ・May 10th-22nd: South America (12 shows) ← *THE BRAZILIAN ‘77 (May 20th: *SPOT THE PIGEON* released) ・June 2nd-July 3rd: Europe (20 shows) ← *DEFINITIVE ZURICH 1977 (October 8th: Steve Hackett leaves the band / 14th: *SECONDS OUT* released) This was Genesis in 1977. *WIND & WUTHERING* was released in December of the previous year, and the tour began early on New Year’s Day. Many masterpieces were produced from each leg of the tour, but the epicenter was the main leg, “North America”. Let’s take a closer look at the dates. Details of the “North America” leg: February 2-5 (3 shows) * February 6th ‘ST. LOUIS WINDS’ February 8-15 (6 shows) * February 16th ‘CHICAGO 1977 2ND NIGHT FM’ February 17th-March 2 (11 shows) * March 3rd ‘QUEBEC 1977 SOUNDBOARD’ March 5-17 (10 shows) * March 19th ‘DALLAS 1977’ March 21st: Austin show * March 24th: Inglewood show ←★This release★ * March 25th ‘SAN FRANCISCO 1977 1ST NIGHT’ March 26th: San Francisco show (2nd day) * March 27th ‘SAN DIEGO 1977 MILLARD MASTER’ April 1st-May 1 (5 shows) A legendary night recreated from four different masters Speaking of Millard’s works from 1977, “SAN DIEGO 1977: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES” was already a huge hit. The Inglewood performance featured in this release was a concert held three days earlier (three shows prior). This show was also a historic night, as it marked Genesis’ first appearance on the legendary “L.A. Forum” stage. While the San Diego performance was recorded from the 16th row, this time it was from the second row of Section A. It was recorded from a prime seat, just two rows from the stage. However, this recording was not perfect. Millard missed most of the first two songs, and there was also a tape change error. Furthermore, the second tape went missing, and the original master of the second half of the show was lost. Even Millard himself, before his death, had patched up other performances and put them up for trade. That’s when the prestigious “JEMS,” which has dedicated itself to unearthing Millard’s work, stepped up. The entire team worked together to search for recordings of that day. Using the four masters that were eventually discovered, they reconstructed the show from that day. Of course, none of the four are ordinary audience recordings. Let’s take a look at their contents. Millard recording – original master: One For The Vine (end only) / Robbery, Assault And Battery / Your Own Special Way / Firth Of Fifth / Carpet Crawlers / …In That Quiet Earth / Afterglow / I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) / Eleventh Earl Of Mar / Supper’s Ready (partially) – 1st generation: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Musical Box: Closing section) – Other copy recordings: Dance On A Volcano (second half) / Drum Duet / Los Endos Goldstein recording – beginning: Squonk / One For The Vine – second half: Supper’s Ready (end only) / Dance On A Volcano (partially) The Millard sound is super close, captured from the second row… and so, as you can see, the Millard recording makes up almost the entire show. The majority of the tracks are from the newly unearthed original master tapes, with the lost “second tape” parts patched in with “first generation” and “copy recordings.” Furthermore, the opening scene of “Squonk/One For The Vine,” which Millard failed to record properly, and the final section of “Supper’s Ready/Dance On A Volcano” are supplemented with Goldstein recordings. And the original Millard master tapes, which make up the majority of this album, are absolutely superb, leaving you speechless. The sheer thickness of the core sound, the zero-distance sense of intimacy, the separation of each instrument, the incredibly clear detail even down to the tambourine jingles… everything is perfect and beyond reproach. It’s even tighter and more soundboard-like than Millard’s other album, “SAN DIEGO 1977,” released three days later. This is what a recording from the second row sounds like. Of course, the other three master tapes used for supplementation are also top-notch. The “1st Generation” part is of a quality that comes very close to the original master, and even the “copy recording” (although there are undeniable signs of dubbing and degradation) has outstanding clarity because the original was a Millard recording. The Goldstein recording has a different character because the original source is different, and the vocal resonance has the atmosphere of the hall. It is not as close as the Millard recording, but the dynamism is even better than the Millard recording, and it is also of the highest quality. The “LA Forum recording” was a combined version that Millard himself created during his lifetime, calling it “incomplete.” This live album is a restoration of that original master, using recordings by his friend Goldstein and Millard copies secretly held by collectors around the world. A cultural heritage album that captures the special night when Genesis first stood on the L.A. Forum stage, with the design of two masters, Millard and Goldstein. A superb audience recording of the “Inglewood performance on March 24, 1977.” Based on the original Millard master recording, the full show has been reconstructed using a total of four masters, including the Goldstein recording from the same day. The Millard sound from the second row surpasses even ‘SAN DIEGO 1977′ in its superb quality, making this a masterpiece that allows you to experience Genesis’ first performance at the L.A. Forum. L.A.
