Description
Paul Weller’s 2002 album, “ILLUMINATION,” topped the UK charts for the first time in a long while, demonstrating his immense popularity into the 21st century. Now, a completely official-quality video capturing that glorious performance has been released. This film was shot at his “Hyde Park concert on July 28, 2002,” and it’s a superb multi-camera pro-shot. Hyde Park in London is a “holy site” in British music history. You can experience Weller’s magnificent presence on that grand stage in perfect video. First, let’s look at the context of his activities at the time to understand the position of this film. This Hyde Park performance was the 10th show of their “Europe #1” tour, approximately two months before the release of “ILLUMINATION.” It was an ambitious stage performance featuring a large number of new songs, and could be considered a “preview” of the new album’s release. The performance was professionally filmed and broadcast. This DVD is a remaster from the best version. The visual beauty can only be described as “official-grade.” And it’s the kind of quality that would be perfectly acceptable even without the caveat of “for the time.” At the start of the show, it was still twilight and there was no lighting, but you can see the members’ faces and even their fingertips clearly, and the spectacle of the huge crowd gathered at Hyde Park is perfectly captured. And the fantastical mood as the sun gradually sets as the show progresses song by song is also incredibly beautiful. The special atmosphere of Hyde Park is also captured in the video. You can enjoy the full show, which lasts about 111 minutes, at the exact same level as an official release. The “ILLUMINATION Tour” is packed with rare tracks, and this full show is depicted with official-quality visuals. 2002 was the year after the official live album “DAYS OF SPEED,” but the setlist and content are completely different. “DAYS OF SPEED” was an acoustic work featuring Weller playing guitar and singing, but this is a full electric performance with a band. Only three songs are shared: “You Do Something To Me,” “Out Of The Sinking,” and “Wild Wood.” Let’s take a look at the contents of this full setlist. Illumination (5 songs) – A Bullet For Everyone / Leafy Mysteries / All Good Books (★) / Standing Out In The Universe (★) / Call Me No. 5 (★★) Others (5 songs + 7 songs + 7 songs) – Wild Wood: Sunflower / Hung Up / Can You Heal Us (Holy Man) / Foot Of The Mountain / Wild Wood – Stanley Road: Whirlpool’s End / Broken Stones / You Do Something To Me / Stanley Road / Out Of The Sinking / The Changingman / Woodcutter’s Son – Others: Bull-Rush (Magic Bus) / Friday Street / Up In Suze’s Room / This Is No Time (★) / Picking Up Sticks / Peacock Suit / Into Tomorrow *Note: “★” indicates a song that was not performed after this tour. “★★” in particular indicates an extremely rare song that was only recorded on this day. …and so on. Particularly valuable are the new songs from the upcoming album “ILLUMINATION,” which was nearing release. “All Good Books” and “Standing Out In The Universe” are also rare tracks that haven’t been performed since this tour, but the real highlight is “Call Me No. 5,” an extremely rare song recorded only on this day. Special guests also make an appearance on “Call Me No. 5” and the grand finale, “Woodcutter’s Son.” Kelly Jones of STEREOPHONICS joins the stage, delivering a spectacular collaboration befitting Hyde Park. It’s practically an official release. In fact, it’s a video masterpiece that boasts value equal to or even exceeding that of the official studio album “ILLUMINATION.” This is the definitive Weller Collection video that should have been released officially. This is a full-length, official-quality multi-camera pro-shot recording of Hyde Park on July 28, 2002, released the year after “DAYS OF SPEED.” It’s a band-style rock show with plenty of rare tracks from “ILLUMINATION,” totaling approximately 111 minutes of content. It also features the ultra-rare “Call Me No. 5,” performed only on this day, and a guest appearance with Kelly Jones, making it an absolute must-see video that serves as an official substitute.
