Description
The third incarnation of Deep Purple, with its unparalleled twin-vocal system, greatly expanded the possibilities of hard rock. Now, a definitive edition has been released that allows you to experience the extremely rare early track “What’s Goin’ On Here.” This top-of-the-line updated edition, polished by “GRAF ZEPPELIN” using the latest upgraded master, is set to be released! This album permanently preserves the “Brussels concert on December 14, 1973.” It is a legendary audience recording. There is the classic album with a similar title, “BRUSSELS 1973,” and some people may have the impression that “the third incarnation” refers to 1974-1975. This album is a live album that overturns that image. To understand the situation, let’s first look back at the overview of their turbulent activities. 1973: January 13th – “Purple Portrait” released; January 16th – March 20th: Europe #1 (36 shows) ← *BRUSSELS 1973; April 12th – June 19th: North America #1 (42 shows); June 23rd – 29th: Japan (6 shows: Phase II collapse); September: Phase III begins; November: “Purple Flame” completed; December 9th – 17th: Europe #2 (5 shows) ← ★HERE★ 1974: January 20th – 26th: Europe #3 (5 shows); March 3rd – April 9th: North America #2 (26 shows) ← *CALIFORNIA JAM 1974; April 18th – June 27th: UK (24 shows) ← *Official LIVE IN LONDON and other locations, August 24-30: North America #3 (4 shows) [September: Completion of “Storm Messenger”], September 18-28: Europe #4 (9 shows), November 13-December 17: North America #4 (19 shows). This was Deep Purple in 1973/1974. In 1973, there were two shows in Brussels, and “BRUSSELS 1973” is “Europe #1” of the second phase. In contrast, this work was recorded at the third show of “Europe #2,” which was just beginning of the third phase. It is a valuable record of the time when the members, who had just finished recording “Purple Fire,” were feeling their way through and solidifying their stage presence. A new masterpiece was born in the very early stages when the legend began! This work, which conveys such a show from its dawn, is a newly mastered version that has recently appeared. The recording itself has been known for some time, but this is the latest transfer version newly digitized from analog cassette by the renowned collector “Lucifer Burns.” Moreover, this is a top-of-the-line updated version with meticulous mastering by “GRAF ZEPPELIN.” It’s a top-of-the-line updated version with corrections for pitch, phase shift, frequency EQ, and sound distortion. The sound is truly the best. The new transfer version released online was better than the previous one, but it was still unstable and had a harshness to it. However, thanks to the “GRAF ZEPPELIN” effect, this version has dramatically improved in terms of completeness as a musical album, reaching the level of a cool live album that is easy to listen to and allows you to fully immerse yourself in it. This is not just “the best of that day,” but you could even call it “the best of Europe #2.” Until now, the Gothenburg recording (December 11th) was “well, it’s the best,” but this version is even easier to listen to. Although it is still within the realm of vintage recordings, it is truly a new representative work that “if you want to know the beginning of the third phase, start with this!” This complete version includes the important song “What’s Goin’ On Here.” More important than the sound is the encore finale, “What’s Goin’ On Here”! In fact, while the new master had an upgraded sound, it was missing the extremely rare and crucial song “What’s Goin’ On Here.” This release fills that gap from a different master, recreating the full show. Moreover, this filled-in part is originally from the same recording, just through a different path. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has done such meticulous mastering that the connection point is virtually indistinguishable. This is truly significant. After all, “What’s Goin’ On Here” was only performed live a few times, and is an extremely rare song with only one recording of it being played at “Europe #2.” To be able to experience this iconic song live… this is the biggest selling point of this release. The ensemble of the early days permeates the entire full show. Of course, this release isn’t just special for one song. The overall atmosphere of “Europe #2” is completely different from the other legs of the show. The third iteration of Deep Purple had a completely different ensemble structure from the second iteration, and its musical style, which even incorporated R&B, was also different. It was a major overhaul, more like a “new band” than just a simple member change. And “Europe #2” was recorded right after its inception. There’s still a sense of them feeling their way around as they try to solidify their individuality. Even in new songs like “Might Just Take Your Life,” Glenn sings in a style that’s relatively consistent with the album, not the unrestrained shouting style of later years. “What’s Goin’ On Here” also seems to aim for a groovy, upbeat feel, hinting at the shadow of “Strange Kind Of Woman” from the second iteration. This album allows you to hear the truth about where the third iteration was headed, through the actual sound. The dawn of the third iteration, which could not be described as the “formation of a new band,” is testified to in its raw brilliance in this new definitive version of “Europe #2.” Experience the raw, experimental feel of just the third performance, and the extremely rare “What’s Goin’ On Here,” all in the highest-quality, updated sound thanks to the latest transfer and GRAF ZEPPELIN. This is a legendary audience recording of the Brussels performance on December 14, 1973. A definitive recording documenting the early days of the band’s third phase, just three performances in total. GRAF ZEPPELIN has polished Lucifer Burns’ latest transfer, and the extremely rare track “What’s Goin’ On Here” has been supplemented with a different master (a different recording path) to create this top-of-the-line updated version.
