Description
1973 was the year when Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet reached its most spiritual and liberating peak. This album is a precious record of a Berlin performance that captures the very heart of that period. This time is a particularly important turning point in Keith Jarrett’s creative history. After his electric period, he completely focused his musical vision on small ensembles, establishing a unique sound that fused highly free improvisation with dense composition, centered around the unit later known as the “American Quartet.” Furthermore, the ensemble is characterized by its blurring of the boundaries between composition and improvisation, while integrating the strong individuality of each member. Redman’s primal tenor saxophone, Hayden’s singing bass, Motian’s spatial drumming, and Jarrett’s holistic pianism mutually inspire each other, and the music is presented as a constantly evolving “process.” Live at Philharmonie, Berlin, Germany 11/03/1973 1.
