Description
This recording captures the April 27, 1987 performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City in stunning soundboard quality. The setlist is drastically different from the 1985 tour, and the show starts off with the classic “Crossroads” with overwhelming power, making it feel fresh. Four songs from his then-new album “AUGUST” are included (Hung Up On Your Love, Miss You, Tearing Us Apart, Holy Mother), and while retaining its black contemporary feel, he also plays his more traditional hits. The impression of this performance can be summed up in one word: “sharpness.” I had never heard Clapton play with such precision before. His shredding on “Tearing Us Apart” is particularly incredible, and in “Badge,” he plays a remarkably long solo in the intro before the vocals kick in, a pattern that is very rare in live performances of that song. In the other numbers as well, the minimal band configuration works to its advantage, resulting in a wonderful performance that brings out the best in each individual musician. Within the clearly amplified band groove, each member skillfully incorporates well-timed, sharp playing at various points, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the groove. This effect is easily discernible in “Same Old Blues,” which is performed for over 18 minutes, reminiscent of a progressive rock suite. The exquisite harmony between backing guitar and vocals in vocal tracks such as “I Shot The Sheriff” and “Miss You,” and the thrillingly executed “Layla,” reveal the band’s peak performance during this period. This can be considered a representative performance of the 1987 tour. Madison Square Garden New York NY U.S.A. April 27, 1987 DISC ONE 01. Crossroads 02. White Room 03. I Shot The Sheriff 04.
