Description
BLACK SABBATH, who broke new ground in heavy music in 1970 with their two masterpieces “Black Sabbath” and “Paranoid,” have had their magnificent performance at the end of the year captured in this superb recording, which has been updated to its highest level with meticulous mastering. This release permanently preserves the “Copenhagen performance on December 12, 1970,” a superb audience recording. The “PARANOID Tour” spanned 1970 and 1971, and other highly acclaimed recordings such as the famous pro-shot “BRUSSELS 1970” and the iconic audience recording “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1971” are also popular. First, let’s take a look at the overview of their activities at the time and check their relationship to these masterpieces. 1970 “BLACK SABBATH Tour” – January 3rd – September 5th: Europe #1 (113 shows) ← *MONTREUX 1970 and others “PARANOID Tour” – September 11th – October 26th: Europe #2 (24 shows) ← *BRUSSELS 1970 – October 30th – November 27th: North America #1 (40 shows) ← *PORTLAND 1970 – December 5th – 20th: Europe #3 (7 shows) ← ★HERE★ 1971 – January 7th – 23rd: Europe #4 (11 shows) ← *SHEFFIELD 1971 – January 31st: MYPONGA OPEN AIR appearances – February 6th + 7th: Netherlands (2 shows) – February 17th – April 4th: North America #2 (41 shows) – April 15th – 26th: Europe #5 (10 shows) ← *ETERNAL VOID OF DOOM and others “MASTER OF REALITY Tour” – July 2nd – August 17th: North America #3 (30 shows) ← *BEGGARS’ BANQUET DANCE – September 4th – 7th: Europe #6 (3 shows) – September 18th – October 23rd: North America #4 (27 shows) ← *MASTER OF WINTERLAND and others – December 3rd – 6th: Europe #7 (3 shows) A new record of the highest quality with Graf Zeppelin’s restorationist mastering. This is “PARANOID The overall picture of the “Tour.” The “North America #1” in October 1970 was a historic first American tour, and the Copenhagen performance featured on this album came shortly after. It was the second show of the “Europe #3” tour, marking their triumphant return to Europe, and a record of a whirlwind tour before the Christmas holidays at the end of the year. This recording of that show is also a top-of-the-line updated version remastered by “GRAF ZEPPELIN.” The original source was already renowned for its powerful sound, but it has been polished with obsessive precision. Pitch/phase correction, various noise reductions, bandwidth adjustments… While remaining true to the basics, every aspect has been reviewed and improved, resulting in an upgraded version with increased precision. Of course, “GRAF Because it’s “ZEPPELIN,” no matter how much time and effort is put into it, there’s absolutely no sense of clever, artificial production. Rather, the naturalness is enhanced by a restoration philosophy of on-site sound that is akin to the restoration of paintings and cultural artifacts, achieving a freshness that makes it seem as if the very air of December 1970 has been revived. “Paranoid” played twice!? An unprecedented show, a full experience of over 70 minutes. Depicted with such top-notch sound is a lengthy full show that is like a concentrated version of the two masterpieces “Black Sabbath” + “Paranoid.” Let’s take a look at the setlist. Black Sabbath (4 songs)・N.I.B. (★) / Behind The Wall Of Sleep (★) / Black Sabbath / Wicked World (*) Paranoid (5 songs, 6 takes)・Paranoid (2 times) / War Pigs / Iron Man / Hand Of Doom (★) / Fairies Wear Boots *Note: “*” indicates the super famous pro-shot “BRUSSELS This is a setlist that wasn’t on “1970”. The “★” mark indicates songs that weren’t on “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1971”. …and so on. The setlist is based on the classic pro-shot “BRUSSELS 1970” and bridges the gap to “DEFINITIVE SHEFFIELD 1971”. The fact that it’s about 73 minutes long is also noteworthy; although it fits on one CD, such a long stage performance is extremely rare for early BLACK SABBATH. And the biggest point of interest is that they play “Paranoid” twice. They start the show with “Paranoid” right away, give it their all in the main part of the show, and then come back to “Paranoid” again in the encore. This unusual double performance is the first time it’s been played in any of the currently confirmed recordings. This album and the one from 1971 are the only two recordings of this song. Even though it’s from their early days when their repertoire was small, they played this new song twice, even though they hadn’t played all of their songs, which shows just how much they loved this one. It’s one of the best-sounding recordings from the “PARANOID Tour,” and an extremely rare set. This historically significant recording has been revived with “GRAF ZEPPELIN”‘s restoration-focused mastering. It is truly a cultural heritage album. A superb audience recording of the “December 12, 1970 Copenhagen concert.” This is the highest-quality updated version of the famous PARANOID Tour recording, polished by “GRAF ZEPPELIN,” and allows you to enjoy a rare, long concert of approximately 73 minutes for early Sabbath. This cultural heritage album allows you to experience firsthand an exceptional full show in which “Paranoid” is played twice. K.B.
