A rare recording has emerged, featuring a complete, high-quality stereo audience recording of their German performance in 1978, the year after the release of their debut album, “NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES!!”. Ian Dury & The Blockheads were riding a wave of success, with their single “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” released on the Stiff label, reaching number 3 on the UK charts, and their debut album, “NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES!!,” released in September 1977, reaching number 5 on the UK charts! This release features a rare recording of their March 2, 1978 performance at the Onkel Pors Carnegie Hall in Hamburg, Germany, during their spring European tour, captured in excellent stereo audience recording quality! The Amsterdam performance the following day was recorded in excellent stereo audience recording quality on the same label’s previously released album, “COMPLETE PARADISO TAPES 78 (TOTH2055),” and while this recording also has a few slightly over-leveled sections, it boasts a wide dynamic range and a well-balanced, clear sound image for both the vocals and each instrument. It’s a shame that the ending of the final song, “Blockheads,” is missing, but otherwise, there are no problems. The recording begins with an introduction of the band by Cosmo Vinyl, The Clash’s publicist and tour manager, announcing the opening. The setlist mainly consists of songs from their masterpiece album “NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES!!”, starting with the hit single “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”. You can fully enjoy a superb performance, including rare tracks from their Kilburn & The High-Lows era such as “Upminster Kid” and “Billy Bentley”, as well as the single “Sweet Gene Vincent” and its B-side “You’re More Than Fair”!
