Description
The original master recording of a famous soundboard recording from Eric Clapton’s 1976 US tour has appeared! We have obtained the original master recording of a famous live recording of Eric Clapton! This release is a leaked recording from someone involved with the band, featuring a clear and expansive stereo soundboard recording of the November 15th Dallas, Texas concert from the “No Reason to Cry US Tour” in the fall of 1976. At the time in America, this master was the main stereo soundboard source broadcast on the famous live FM program “King’s Biscuit Flower Hour (KBFH)”. Among fans, it is known that the San Antonio concert on the 12th, the Houston concert on the 14th, this Dallas concert, and the Norman concert on the 16th were officially recorded. It is thought that these were all recorded to make up the KBFH live program. The radio station probably intended to edit and broadcast the best takes from the four concerts. However, the version that was broadcast was initially thought to be only the Dallas concert take. Numerous bootlegs produced from sources recorded off the air of KBFH also attributed this performance to the Dallas concert. However, listening to the master recording of this work was a surprise. The performance differed from the take included in the previously released “DALLAS 1976 PRE-FM MASTER” in the Intro, Hello old friend, Sign language, and from 1:51 onwards in Can’t find my way home, as well as in Tell the truth, Blues Power, One night, and Layla. After carefully examining and verifying each take, the following was discovered. “DALLAS 1976 PRE-FM MASTER” = KBFH broadcast version 1. Hello old friend (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) 2. Sign language (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) 3. Badge (take from the Dallas concert on the 15th) 4. Knockin’ on heaven’s door (take from the Dallas concert on the 15th) 5. One Night (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) 6. Tell the truth (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) 7. Can’t find my way home (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) *However, the Dallas concert take is used from 0:00 to 1:51 8. Blues Power (take from the Houston concert on the 14th) 9. Layla (take from the Dallas concert on the 15th) *However, due to broadcast time constraints, the drum & percussion solo in the middle has been edited out by more than 2 minutes. *All our past times and Further on up the road were not broadcast.・Key to the Highway was also performed at the Dallas concert, but it is not included on the master. It is likely that the recording of this song failed for some reason. In other words, the KBFH broadcast version was composed of live takes from the Houston concert on the 14th and the Dallas concert on the 15th. Conversely, this means that the master on this release is a flawless, superb stereo soundboard recording of only the pure Dallas concert, which was the original source for the FM broadcast, and for the six songs from the Houston concert that were broadcast on KBFH, previously unreleased takes from the Dallas concert can be heard. There are previously released albums that contain KBFH audio, but those were made from the KBFH broadcast version, and moreover, the master at the time was a copy of a cassette master that was leaked on cassette. This time, the master is a digital copy of the original leaked analog tape that an overseas taper obtained in early 1977 from someone who had a friend who was a soundman for that day’s concert. Therefore, this recording is undoubtedly the best sound quality ever, and its value lies in the fact that it is a recording of the pure Dallas performance only, not the broadcast version. Furthermore, the previously released stereo soundboard title “Houston 1976 Soundboard Master” also allows you to hear takes that replaced the Dallas performance and numbers that were not broadcast. In other words, this work and “Houston 1976 Soundboard Master” can be said to be two must-listen works that convey the full scope of KBFH. Along with this work, “Dallas 1976 Soundboard,” please take this opportunity to also listen to “Houston 1976 Soundboard Master.” Another great recording from the “No Reason to Cry US Tour”! Here, let’s review the topics of that year and what position this US tour held in Clapton’s career.・July 29th – August 17th, 1976: UK tour ≪August 1st, 1976: Album “NO REASON TO CRY” released≫ ・November 5th – 22nd, 1976: US tour ←★HERE★ ・November 26th, 1976: The Band’s farewell concert “The Last Waltz” is held In other words, this US tour was positioned as a promotional tour for the album “NO REASON TO CRY,” a confident work produced with the participation of Bob Dylan and members of The Band. Naturally, the setlist included new songs from this album. Clapton’s enthusiasm is evident in the fact that he performs two songs from this album early on in this performance. Clapton is in top form that day and is playing his heart out. This is evident from “Badge,” the first song he plays in the electric set. His slowhand technique explodes during the solo in the middle of the song, which is tremendous. This enthusiasm continues, and from this point onward, Clapton’s playing is superb throughout the entire album. Of course, he must have known beforehand that it might be used for radio broadcast, so Clapton’s enthusiasm is understandable. In previous releases, the six songs mentioned above were takes from other performances, so I hope you will savor Clapton’s excellent form at the Dallas concert in this release. “Tell the Truth” is in no way inferior to the Houston concert take used for KBFH. This is also a passionate performance lasting over 13 minutes. In fact, this take gives the impression that Clapton is playing even more to his heart’s content. It’s a hard-to-discard take, and you can imagine the radio station having a hard time choosing which song to play. Another point of interest is that “All Our Past Times,” which was played acoustically on the previous UK tour, is played electric here. Therefore, you can enjoy a solo duet between Clapton and second guitarist George Terry (on the UK tour, only Terry’s solo was played). The first solo is by Terry, and the second solo is by Clapton. Also, Terry sings the second chorus, and it’s rare to hear him sing. This arrangement definitely brings out the song’s charm. He also delivers a sharp performance on “Blues Power,” but his rendition of “Layla,” which he plays as the closing number of the regular set, is also worth listening to. Jamie Oldaker’s drum solo and Sergio Rodriguez’s percussion solo are included uncut in the middle. These long, rhythmically explosive solos perfectly capture the Texas mood. The moment the percussionists’ solos end and they return with that seven-note phrase during the break is thrilling. Clapton’s solo on this song is also incredibly sharp. It’s a passionate 15-minute performance that’s definitely worth listening to. For the encore, Clapton calls upon his idol, bluesman Freddie King, to join him on stage. This take is included on the 2CD version of the official compilation album “BLUES,” so some of you may have already heard it, but you’ll be overwhelmed by Clapton’s majestic presence as he goes head-to-head with Freddie. The interplay between the two in the middle is also thrilling. Incidentally, in the setlist, Yvonne Elliman, who was in the band at the time, is featured as a female backing vocalist on “Can’t Find My Way Home,” and Marcy Levy is featured on “One Night” (Clapton is offstage on both songs and does not participate in the playing). The Clapton band, formed in 1974, boasted unparalleled cohesion by this time, and the relationships between the members were excellent, allowing you to experience truly unified professionalism. It is commonly said that the 1976 tour, when he began to lean towards country music, was rather laid-back, but that’s completely wrong! This recording captures a performance by Clapton that is the complete opposite, one that is intensely passionate. The original master of the flawless, standalone stereo soundboard recording of the Dallas concert, originally recorded for an FM radio show, is now being released.
