Description

LA Forum is a renowned arena, literally a sacred place for Led Zeppelin, and their first live performance there took place during their spring 1970 tour. Many photographs remain from that day, and it’s nostalgic to remember that Plant’s majestic figure was even used on the cover of the Japanese single. As for audience recordings, they first saw the light of day on Mad Dogs’ “D’YA FEEL ALRIGHT?”. This is Source 1, but perhaps because of its close sound image and distinctly vintage audience recording style, it didn’t receive much attention. Later, Source 2 appeared with superior sound quality. While this one boasts clear and easy-to-listen-to sound quality, it unfortunately omits three tracks. So, as we entered the 21st century, best-of compilations combining the two sources, such as EV’s “EVERYBODY FEEL ALRIGHT?”, or the now-nostalgic TCOLZ release “FIRST TIME AT THE FORUM,” which coupled both sources, were released. However, all of those items uniformly suffered from problems such as significant sound bias due to phase shifts in Source 1, or incomplete correction of pitch inaccuracies. So this time, we started with the main Source 2, and by using a master that did not go through the internet, we achieved the most natural sound ever. I think it’s a really clear and easy-to-listen-to recording. We then combined it with the three missing Source 1 tracks, and here too, we used a natural master that did not go through the internet, and thoroughly corrected and compensated for the aforementioned phase shifts. It certainly has a more vintage feel compared to Source 2, but the restoration and naturalness this time make it much easier to listen to. Moreover, we achieved a complete recording by making extensive use of Source 1 not only for the missing performances but also for cuts. For example, the cut at the beginning of “How Many More Times” is compensated for with Source 1, but at first listen there is no sense of incongruity at all, and you might only think that the taper has been slightly messed up. Furthermore, we thoroughly corrected the tape distortion in the latter half of “Bring It On Home,” which was another drawback of Source 1, and adjusted it to a completely stress-free state. Even this section alone demonstrates a level of stability that is incomparable to previous releases. The two audio sources are meticulously combined to recreate Led Zeppelin’s first performance at the LA Forum, and it has a wonderfully fresh atmosphere. Little did they know that five months later, when they returned to the same venue, their first historic performance would be born. Their earnest performance in the LA arena, which they were seeing for the first time, is captured vividly in clear sound quality. You might be surprised at how easy the sound quality is to listen to. “Heartbreaker,” whose arrangement was far from finalized, would see various intro performances tried on this tour, but it’s interesting that it starts straightforwardly on this day. The performance of “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” which had been continuously tested since Europe before its release, and “Whole Lotta Love,” with Jonesy playing the organ, are also very fresh. And what is particularly raw as a document is the scene after the show captured in Source 1. A huge cheer erupts when it is announced that “Jimi Hendrix will be performing here next month.” That live performance is none other than the highly acclaimed “L.A. FORUM 1970,” now on sale. This is an incredibly valuable record, showing that even at the LA Forum, where Led Zeppelin would later deliver legendary performances that would prove their status as champions, they played with such tact on their first appearance… Remaster Notes ★Based on Rec2, with missing parts supplemented by Rec1 ★Phase shift in Rec1 corrected.
