Description
This rare recording of Johnny Thunders and Wayne Kramer’s band, Gang War, playing some extremely rare tracks is here for the first time! This rare recording features a live performance at First Lane in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on September 30, 1979, in excellent mono audience quality! Digitally transferred directly from the master cassette, the sound quality is reasonably average for the time. While the vocals are a bit off during the first set, the vocals are crystal clear and loud during the second set, with each part well-balanced. While Johnny’s performance can be inconsistent depending on the day, he was in excellent condition on this day, and his chemistry with Wayne was outstanding! The first show’s setlist included the opening “Ramblin’ Rose,” Wayne on lead vocals, “If You’re Going to the City,” “Hey Thanks,” and the rare gang war-era original “King of the Gypsies,” originally featured on Johnny’s 1983 cassette tape “Too Much Junkie Business.” The second set included only one song remaining from the first: “The Harder They Come.” They also performed a cover of Fats Domino’s “I’m Gonna Be A Wheel,” recorded as a demo in June of that year but rarely performed live. They also performed the extremely rare “I Wanna Love Her So Bad” and “Laughing At You.” Both tracks feature Johnny on vocals, making them unheard of both live and in-studio tracks. Plus, they included “Great Big Kiss,” featuring Brooklyn-born singer Joy Ryder on vocals. This is a truly stunning album.
