Description
SANTANA made their record debut in 1969, garnering worldwide attention. This cultural heritage album allows you to experience that dawning season live. This work captures the band’s February 14, 1969 performance in San Francisco. This exquisite audience recording was recorded at the legendary Fillmore West venue. A newly discovered live album predating their first album. Formed in 1966, 1969 marked the band’s first and greatest turning point. They signed a record deal, released their debut album, and performed at the legendary Woodstock Festival, making their name known worldwide. This album, however, is a record from their earliest days. Let’s explore just how early they were and uncover their position by exploring their activities at the time. 1969 – January 10th + 11th: US #1 (2 shows); February 11th – April 18th: US #2 (26 shows); ★here★ {May: “SANTANA” Production}; May 3rd – August 11th: US #3 (38 shows); August 16th: Woodstock Appearance {August 22nd: “SANTANA” Release}; August 21st – December 31st: US #4 (64 shows). This is the 1969 SANTANA. As you can see, this Fillmore West performance was earlier than the Woodstock appearance, let alone the recording of the debut album. It was the third performance of “US #2.” The ultra-thick, clear sound of a soundboard is truly a record from the dawn of time, but the sound is so amazing that it’s hard to believe how precious it is. The ultra-thick core is on, approaching without any sense of distance, and there’s absolutely no sense of emptiness. Between songs, the sound feels much closer than the roaring applause, and even the finer details remain. Since the original sound was released as an audience recording, we follow suit, but the thoughts of “it’s like a soundboard” and “is this really a customer recording?” never leave our minds. Moreover, it boasts a directness and power, yet is lustrous and beautiful. While the timbre has a vintage feel, there’s almost no tape warping or roughness to be found. The collector who released it calls it “unknown gene,” but this freshness, despite being unearthed more than half a century ago… there’s no doubt it’s a fairly young generation. This is a must-listen first album, a live performance. If such sound is a cultural heritage, then this work’s show content is also a cultural heritage. While the recording is only about 44 minutes long and doesn’t capture the full show, all six songs featured are from the first album repertoire. “Treat” and “Shades of Time,” which weren’t performed at Woodstock, are also extremely rare, making this a truly enjoyable “live debut album.” Enjoying early live performances from the legendary Woodstock Festival with a soundboard-like sound… this is an absolute live album that is nothing less than a cultural heritage. It’s a particularly shining piece in our SANTANA collection. It’s a superb audience recording of the “February 14, 1969 Fillmore West Performance.” The sound, with its powerful core and lack of distance, is simply on and completely free of any sense of emptiness, making you wonder, “Just like a soundboard,” and “Is this really a recording?” This cultural heritage album can also be described as a “live performance first album,” allowing you to enjoy the very early days of live performances before recording of the debut album even began.
