Description
This legendary, official video is here in the highest quality. It was filmed at the June 23, 1982, Irvine concert. It’s the only multi-camera pro-shot from Brad Gillis’ time, “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.” While this is a well-known, traditional video, it’s important to note that this footage is completely separate from the live album “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.” While the LP version was a special show featuring only BLACK SABBATH numbers, the video version is a regular concert from the “DIARY OF A MADMAN Tour.” Like the Randy era, the focus is on solo material, with plenty of Brad versions of “BLIZZARD OF OZZ” and “DIARY OF A MADMAN” tracks. To get an idea of the circumstances, let’s first take a look back at the turbulent year of 1982.・January 1st – March 18th: North America #1 (44 shows) (Randy passed away on March 19th, Bernie Tormé joined) ・April 1st – 10th: North America #2a (7 shows) (Brad Gillis joined) ・April 13th – 28th: North America #2b (51 shows) ←★here★ ・July 9th – 15th: Japan (5 shows) ・August 1st – 8th: North America #3 (3 shows) (Don Airey left) ・September 26th + 27th: North America #4 (2 shows) ←LP version (Pete Way/Lindsey Bridgewater joined) ・December 10th – 20th: UK (7 shows) (Brad & Pete left, Jake & Don Costa joined) This is the full picture for 1982. After Randy’s death, Bernie Tormé filled in for only 7 shows, and then Brad joined. He served as Randy’s official guitarist until Jake joined the band at the end of the year. Michael Schenker, George Lynch, and John Sykes were all mentioned as potential replacements for Randy, but only Bernie and Brad actually performed with him. While the LP version of “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” was a special September performance, this Irvine performance was three months earlier, the 49th show of “North America #3.” It was three shows before their legendary first visit to Japan. The show was officially filmed and released exclusively in Japan as the video version “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.” It was later officially released on DVD, but it’s now out of print and becoming a hotbed of demand. This film is a reissue of that traditional footage. While the official DVD releases often contain cuts and audio delays, this is the best version, clocking in at a length of 78 minutes. This is truly a masterpiece. What’s most impressive is the collection of classic songs, punctuated by the band’s impressive arm-twisting techniques. While more modern than Randy, Brad’s unique undulations are distinct from Jake’s scratchy style, smooth yet sharp. He’s not simply messing around with his arm strokes; he understands the song’s ideas and incorporates them with flair, which is what makes him so cool. While guitarists after Zach have paid homage to the legendary Randy by staying faithful to the originals, Brad is different. Being of the same generation, he interprets things boldly, and being a genius, he doesn’t just play with his quirks. The show makes you wonder what kind of masterpieces Brad would have left behind if he had stayed in Ozzy Osbourne’s band. And even more than that, the show itself is amazing. This video is Ozzy Osbourne’s first solo video, and it offers plenty of enjoyment of his heroic figure in the early ’80s, when he was a “heavy metal evangelist” alongside JUDAS PRIEST. The overdubbed vocals are charming, but the gothic set is full of atmosphere, with the timeless laser-beam-drawing of letters and bats on “Mr. Crowley” and the now-impossible “Goodbye To Romance” featuring hanging dwarves are truly vintage. While NWOBHM was in full swing at the time, it was none other than Priest and Ozzy Osbourne who articulated the fierce, sinister new music of “heavy metal.” While their full-scale entrance into living rooms around the world came the following year with US festivals, it was undoubtedly the “Diary of a Madman Tour” that laid the groundwork. It was this tour’s impact that catapulted LA metal and thrash metal into bloom. This is a rare, official, multi-camera footage of the event. Whether he wanted it or not, the Prince of Darkness became a “heavy metal evangelist” and became known as its icon. This masterpiece not only showcases Brad Gillis’ virtuosity, but also allows you to fully appreciate the world-changing show. It’s a film that will show you why Ozzy Osbourne is the Godfather of Metal. This is the highest quality version of the only official footage from the Brad Gillis era. This is an official pro shot that allows you to witness the show where his unique arm-twisting style transforms the classic songs of the Randy Rhoads era.
