Description
This rare recording, released during the North American tour promoting the 1986 album “Song X,” features a May 10th performance at the Palace Theater in New Haven and a May 11th performance at the Berklee Performance Center, marking a shocking arrival for fans. The band members, led by the two masters Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman, comprise an unconventional quintet featuring Charlie Haden on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ornette Coleman’s son, Denard Coleman. Pat Metheny’s profound musicality, effortlessly meeting Ornette Coleman’s demands with thrilling unfoldings, from breathtaking improvised jazz to swinging hard bop, is truly astonishing. Even more astonishing is the stunningly direct sound. Both performances are unearthed audience recordings, but the sound quality is hard to believe considering they were recorded about 40 years ago. Listening to them gives you the illusion of being at a live venue, and even in the front row, bathed in sound. Of course, even listening with earphones will satisfy you with the otherworldly sound. A masterpiece of another dimension has been born ahead of the 40th anniversary celebrations next year. Disc 1 1. Introduction 2. Song X 3. Compute 4. Turnaround 5. Broadway Blues 6.
