Description
The remastered and renewed version of the masterpiece “Mad Shadows” is here on 2CD. First of all, this title was released in 1993 as the third installment of the Old Masters series, and the contents are mainly studio outtakes from 1964 to 1973. At the time of release, it included many songs that appeared for the first time and many quality-improved takes, so it was a popular title that was reissued many times and copies were released from Russia. The selection of songs rooted in their R&B orientation, such as the 1964 Chess recording, and the fact that there were few unreleased tracks with good sound quality in the early days of Decca, are also factors that contributed to its popularity. For this CD release, the “Mad Shadows” part on disc 1 has been remastered with pitch correction, level adjustment, etc. on the master upgrade sound source, and the quality can be said to be of the highest level. First of all, the 1964 Chess recordings on tracks 1-5 on disc 1 are all stereo sources, so they are clearer than the Yellow Dog version, and “DON’T LIE TO ME” is a wide mix with good left and right separation, different from the one included in Metamorphosis, and does not have a fade-out ending. Also, track 7 is the Metamorphosis version, which was missing the credits on the original recording. Track 8 is an outtake from the Aftermath period, in real stereo. Track 9 is an early version at RCA Studios, with a countdown. Track 10 is an outtake from the Between the Buttons period, in the best quality. Track 11 is an early version of the famous Street Fighting Man, also upgraded with wider left and right separation. Track 12 is the promo video version of “Yeah, Yeah”. Track 13 is a stereo mix on acetate with different vocals. Track 14 is a different mix of the officially released version, a rough mix made in the 1970s. 15 is an acoustic version that was never officially released. 16 is an 11-minute jam that is said to be the first session between the Stones and Taylor, and is rarely heard at the correct speed. 17 is a rehearsal recording from the 1972 tour, and is Robert Johnson’s famous pre-war blues number. 18-20 are outtakes of “Goats Head Soup,” which had never been released in a decent state until now, but this time they have been properly remastered and are in the best condition ever. However, since the original was a cassette recording, the sound quality is lower than the other tracks on this album. 16 tracks, excluding tracks 6, 9, 10, and 12, are recorded in stereo. In addition, disc 2 contains a large number of valuable outtakes from the UK Decca period, which were also released under the name Scorpio label (BAD WIZARD). The contents of this album are almost the same as the one released by BAD WIZARD in 2007 as “TIME TRIP VOL.5”. Although the contents are excellent overall, there are many problems such as the beginning being cut off due to editing and the tape speed due to problems with the original sound source. In this situation, this album is not of course a copy of the previous release, but is mainly composed of upgraded materials, and digital noise and error sounds have been adjusted, and these rare takes are recorded in the best condition at once. First of all, the nine songs from 1 to 9 are from a tape-to-tape dubbing session in the studio to make a copy of the Italian version of AS TEARS GO BY, and there is a parade of rare takes from a variety of locations, including Chess in Chicago and Regent in London. 1 is a cover of Arthur Alexander, 5 is a counted track, and 4, 7, and 8 are demo recordings for other artists. 6 is a rejected song composed by Bill Wyman. Track 9 is one step away from being fully completed, without the harpsichord overdubs that can be heard on the official release. Tracks 2 and 3 were recorded at Chess, and are rare recordings that caused quite a stir when released. Tracks 10, 11, and 12 are backing tracks for the 1966 CBS Ed Sullivan Show, with track 10 being a shortened version that was shortened to 2 minutes and 20 seconds for the show’s programming. The guitar at the end of track 12 is a different take and phrase from the official version. Tracks 13-18 are real stereo versions of early singles that first appeared on Scorpio’s “DARTFORD RENEGADES.” The recordings appear to have been mixed at RCA Studios in the US around 1966, and were recorded on two reels at 15ips speed. 13 is Keith’s idea to create a chaotic atmosphere, and the right channel is filled with a deep echo, and just before the ending, you can hear a brass phrase that is mixed out in the regular mix. 14 is an alternate stereo mix in which Brian’s sitar, which should be heard in the right channel after Charlie’s drum beat in the intro, is mixed out. 15 is a stereo version with an alternate vocal. 16 and 17 are stereo versions of the regular take and the vocals. Although the stereo mix of 18 is not uncommon these days, this is an extended mix that fades out 6 seconds later than the regular stereo mix. Furthermore, 19 is an unreleased mono mix in which you can hear the intro being redone before the OK take. 20 and 21 are new takes that have not been included in previous releases, and are being released on CD for the first time. 20 has the same backing as the regular version, but Keith sings the intro, and Mick’s vocals are all from an alternate take and are an unreleased version. Disc 21 is a rare take that adds an additional guitar overdub by Keith that has never been heard before to a mono mix of the alternate vocal version of disc 15, and ended up being unreleased. In particular, disc 2 is a mono/stereo recording in such good condition that it could be officially released as is, and as a sequel to the DAC “TIME TRIP” 4CD, this title is also a must-have collector’s edition for fans.
