Description

The 1989 “STEEL WHEELS” tour, which overcame the discord between Mick and Keith and marked the beginning of a new history for the Rolling Stones, was a hot topic from the start. Of course, it was the first live tour in a long time, but the large-scale schedule and large venues that surpassed 1981, and the staging that brought together the latest technology at the time also impressed the Stones’ revival. This tour later produced famous performances and famous sound sources such as the Atlantic City performance and the following year’s visit to Japan, but the sound sources from the early part of the tour were still lacking in decisiveness. During this period, many videos were filmed to be shown on the screens at the venue, but they were all mono recordings. Among them, the Toronto performance on September 3, 1989 is known as one of the few stereo soundboard recordings. MTV recorded the video on this day, and the audio was also recorded on a stereo soundboard. From there, “Mixed Emotion” was broadcast, but after that, the long version of the video was leaked, and since it was stereo sound quality, it produced several items. However, this video was missing a whole lot from the middle of “Honky Tonk Women” to “Sympathy For The Devil”. The precious stereo sound source at the beginning of the tour was very disappointing. However, the “WOLFGANG’S VAULT” site, which caused a big stir in the Stones rare sound source world in 2013, has now released the sound source of this day. This time, it is the same stereo sound source as the past one, but what is particularly noteworthy is that it has been completely recorded for the first time. The unrecorded part in question is also perfect. This alone can be said to be an excavation that wipes out past items, but the improvement in sound quality is also considerable. The previous version was based on a leaked video, so the sound became rough during dubbing and there were occasional distortions in the bass, but it was still a high-quality level for this kind of rare sound source. However, this time there is no degradation due to dubbing or hum noise peculiar to video. The clarity is literally like a skin has been peeled off. And yet it is a complete recording, so there is no complaint. However, as for the sound source of this day, the two guitars are not clearly separated to the left and right, but rather balanced in the center, and it can be said that the two players’ play can be heard from there. Among them, the fact that Keith’s sound is pushed aside by Ronnie and other instruments remains the same this time. However, the increased clarity makes it possible to hear Keith’s sound in many places more than in the past. Even so, the overall performance is just interesting! After all, it does not reach the perfection of the third stage of the tour, Atlantic City and Japan performances. The obvious cautious performance sounds rather fresh. Moreover, since the support Uptown Horns has not been added at this point, the horn part is supplemented with a sample sound from Matt Clifford’s synth. This is especially evident in the interlude of “Harlem Shuffle” and “Satisfaction”, but after all, it’s a synth, and the cheap sound makes me cry. Furthermore, in “Sympathy For The Devil”, Mick starts singing a little early, and in “Gimme Shelter”, the composition becomes suspicious, which is a unique happening at the beginning of the tour, and this is a scene that can only be heard because it was recorded on a sound board for the first time. And it’s really rare to hear the performance of the actual stage of “One Hit (To The Body)” on the sound board, which was no longer performed as the tour progressed. After “Harlem Shuffle”, it was a selection from the album “DIRTY WORK”, but it was dropped from the repertoire after this, although it was played sporadically. The Toronto sound source was originally a staple of the early “STEEL WHEELS” tour, but the appearance of the complete sound board version that has finally been realized will surely surprise fans all over the world. The cut part this time was included immediately after the end of the performance of “Play With Fire”, but the previous video sound source was supplemented there. However, since it is a part other than the performance, it is smooth enough that there is no trace of editing. Thus, a new standard of Toronto 89 SBD, which has been literally recorded completely, is here! Live at CNE Stadium, Toronto, Ontario, Canada 3rd September 1989 STEREO SBD(UPGRADE) Disc 1 (77:16) 1.
