Description

This is the long-awaited complete recording of the Metropolitan Center performance in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which was the ninth performance of the “BLACK AND BLUE” tour, which was held with BLACK SABBATH during the US tour accompanying “CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS” released in 1980, using a high-quality FM line source. Since “MIRRORS” released in 1979, B.O.C. has gradually become oriented towards catchier and more sophisticated musicality. In “CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS” released the following year in 1980, the band seeks material from ancient dinosaurs while also approaching the heavy metal that was gaining popularity at the time. Although this change in direction confused fans from the early 1970s, the album succeeded in producing classic songs that are still requested by fans today, such as the unique “Black Blade” and the speedy “Lips In The Hill”. After the album release, the band started a large-scale tour across the United States, starting with a performance in Rosslyn, New York on June 18, 1980, and performed 76 shows until the Tennessee performance at the end of the same year. Around the same time, BLACK SABBATH, which welcomed Ronnie James Dio, was also managed by Sandy Pearlman, and the two bands jointly planned a “BLACK AND BLUE” tour around the United States. SABBATH and B.O.C. only appeared on the same stage for about 30 shows during their US tours, but this package, where both the “original heavy metal” and the “real heavy metal” giants could be seen at the same time, attracted the attention of fans, and the “BLACK AND BLUE” tour was very exciting from the first day, the performance in Houston, Texas on July 23. This work records the entire performance in Minneapolis on August 19 from this ’80 tour for 96 minutes with a good FM soundboard sound source. Among the live recordings from the same period is “SOFT WHITE ERECTUS,” which has been very well received among fans since its release last year. Since the super sound of the broadcast master direct was superb, it is true that this work, which is based on the air check material of FM broadcasting, is one step behind in terms of sound, but that is only when compared to the former, which has an official-class sound. Although the sound spread and range seem a little narrow, the mix, which has a neat arrangement of vocals and keyboards centered around the guitar, is more than enough to listen to. This work is of course an upper version that has been carefully remastered from the original master, and the ease of listening to the sound is different from the material known among traders. “Dr Music,” which starts the show brightly with its brilliance and catchiness, and “E.T.I.”, where multiple guitars play a thick and heavy sound, are stereo line recordings that easily exceed the standards of the era, and you can enjoy the unique B.O.C. world with a stable sound image from the beginning of the show. The highlight of this recording is the number from “CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS”. The band’s confidence can be seen in the fact that six songs were selected for the live performance, such as the snappy and speedy “Lips In The Hills”, “Unknown Tongue” and “The Marshall Plan”, where Alan Rainier’s piano adds to the heavy world of the song. Furthermore, “Hungry Boys”, which can only be heard on this recording at the moment, is super rare! Fans will be captivated by the B.O.C. style rock and roll with its impressive light phrasing. In the second half of the live performance, “Black Blade” is performed with great dignity, knocking out the listeners with the aura of a classic song that is already on par with “Godzilla” and “Hot Rails To Hell”. The heat at the end of the live, which starts with Joe Bouchard’s bass solo and then goes from “5 Guitars” to “Born To Be Wild”, is the true essence of B.O.C.! This day was a regular live show with SABBATH as the main focus, but the performance was undeniably fun, and the band’s strength was clearly on the rise (Note that at the end of this show, Bill Ward, one of the original members of BLACK SABBATH, left the band. Although this is not directly related to B.O.C., it may be a point that enthusiasts want to remember). The aforementioned “SOFT WHITE ERECTUS” captured the special B.O.C. live booked under the name “SOFT WHITE UNDERBERRY” with the highest quality sound quality, but this work packages the set, including rare songs that were not heard there, with a high-quality line sound source, and even enthusiasts who are familiar with the band’s career will be pleased! This work is sure to gain an important position as a second choice to listen to after the classic sound source. It is an absolutely essential 2-disc 96-minute set for knowing B.O.C.’s 1980 “CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS” tour! Live at Metropolitan Center, Minneapolis, MN. USA 19th August 1980 STEREO SBD Disc 1 1.
