Description

As the excavation of Mike Millard’s masters is nearing its end, JEMS has introduced a new collection of tapers, a collection of tapes recorded by a man named “Barry Goldstein” that is currently causing a sensation among enthusiasts. All of the sound sources that have been released so far are excellent, and enthusiasts are continuing to excavate with David Bowie’s “LOS ANGLES 1974 FINAL NIGHT” and Genesis’ “SANTA MONICA 1974: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER”. In addition, the period that Goldstein recorded was from 1973 to 1983, a period of vintage rock, and expectations are high for future excavations. Among them, the JEMS team introduced The Who from his vast recording collection in March 1976. In March 1976, “BOSTON 1976 REVISITED” and “SEATTLE 1976” were already reigning as the two greatest masterpieces of the period, but the shocking discovery that broke into their ranks was Winterland on the 27th. Six months later, the Who descended on the same venue where the historic “THE LAST WALTZ” by The Band was also held. They were at the height of their popularity on this tour, and arenas were a given, and even stadiums were held as well. The aforementioned “BOSTON 1976 REVISITED” and “SEATTLE 1976” both had a capacity of 15,000, which was the smallest venue on this tour for The Who, who was at the height of their popularity. It was an unusual move for them to use Winterland in San Francisco, which could barely attract 10,000 spectators. In 1976, the Cow Palace was the usual venue for big bands to hold concerts in the area, but on this day Chicago was using the same venue, and as a result, The Who fans in Cisco were fortunate to see them in a smaller venue than usual. Goldstein captured the appearance of such a precious concert. First of all, what surprised me was the very easy-to-listen-to sound quality. The deep sound image captures the explosive feeling of the Who’s performance nicely. Because of this, there are occasions when the sound is slightly distorted, but this is an audience recording that captures The Who’s performance. Even that feels like part of the power. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” thoroughly brushed up such a historically excavated sound source. It made full use of the sound quality that is unique to mono and the outstanding freshness that is hard to believe that it had been buried for nearly 50 years. It’s a pity that the recording ends when “My Generation” develops into “Join Together”, and “GRAF ZEPPELIN” recorded it as a bonus rather than a complement from Winterland the next day. This is an audience recording that has been circulating among traders for a long time, and the sound quality is not comparable to this Goldstein recording, but even so, while listening to the performance, I think you will be drawn in and think, “This is really high tension…”. From Keith Moon’s perspective, it seems that the peak of 1976 was this March. First of all, as recorded in “BOSTON 1976 REVISITED”, the first day of the tour was a big blunder that Keith was drunk and cut off after two songs, and it is clear from the masterpiece “SEATTLE 1976” that Keith gave us a spirited drumming on the stage every day to make up for it. It was the end of the day, so Keith at Winterland was at his peak. The engine was already at full throttle from the opening, and you can be sure of that if you listen to “Baba O’Riley”. In addition, the familiar MC tone before “Behind Blue Eyes” is solid, and the non-drunk tone occasionally seen on this tour suggests that the day was going well. And yet Keith is not one-sidedly sharp, and the band is united and plays as powerfully as ever, which is what is great about this day. This is clearly shown in “Magic Bus” and “Summertime Blues”, and that is why the performance the next day recorded in the bonus can be heard without any discomfort. The two titles released so far were really great sound sources, but this time too, it is an excellent first appearance audience master by Goldstein, who captured the stage of Keith and The Who’s best performance unique to March 1976 with great sound quality. First appearance sound source! There is a sense of distortion, but this can’t be helped. Although it is mono, the freshness is very good AUD sound source. Cut out in the middle of the final stage Join Together. So, as a bonus, we picked up the final part from the same performance on the second day the next day and recorded it!
