Description

From the second half of WHITESNAKE’s 1984 tour, a high-quality audience recording is now available on CD, allowing you to enjoy the charm of the solid four-piece era of Coverdale, Cozy Neal, and John Sykes. The Japan tour held in August 1984 included eight performances in six cities, including an appearance at “SUPER ROCK ’84”, and the band toured not only major metropolitan areas but also regional cities such as Fukuoka and Sapporo, showing off their brave figure to fans all over Japan. This work packs two different high-quality audience sources into one title from the Nagoya performance of “SUPER ROCK ’84” held at Nagoya Baseball Stadium on August 4, the first day of the tour. Disc 1 is the same source as the sound source that was previously released under the title “SYKES WIND”, but the original material is the master of the highest generation that was newly excavated this time, and as a result of the extremely fresh sound from the beginning undergoing a careful treatment process, this sound source has regained a natural and clear outlook just like the sound heard in the audience on the day of the live! From the opening to the beginning of “Gambler”, the taper microphone noise is a concern, but from “Guilty Of Love” you can enjoy the live in a stable state. Coverdale’s singing is as vivid as it was just the other day, and it is a great listening experience along with Sykes’s gorgeous playing that gives off the aura of a guitar hero just by sound alone. In the middle of “Love Ain’t No Stranger”, Neil’s bass can be heard as clearly as this. It seems that there are few WHITESNAKE audience recordings that can follow the rhythm section of Cozy and Neil so closely, and this is also a unique feature of the four-person sound that makes it easy to focus on the stage. The taper was close to the stage, and while it has a superb surround feeling, the sound balance and cohesion are so good that it is hard to believe it is an outdoor festival. The performance outline and balance are outstanding, so much so that you would believe that “Ready An’ Willing” is a broadcast sound source. Cozy’s drum solo is “Mars”, which will be performed for the first time in Japan on this day. The grand and dynamic theme that is typical of Cozy looks even more attractive in a large venue, and the stage effect using pyro at 4:36, which is captured as if it is an event in front of your eyes, is even shocking when heard with the sound of this board. (It seems that there was a tape change after the end of this drum solo, and there is a gap of about 45 seconds due to the master from 9:22 to the beginning of “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” 0:17, but it is naturally compensated for by the source 2 sound source.) This sound source, which completely recorded the pattern of the day for 73 minutes up to “We Wish You Well”, promises the best entertainment that will thoroughly enjoy the live performance that is really WHITESNAKE-like, as if energy is bursting! On Disc 2, the high-quality audience source used in “Slide It Over” was recorded again from the original master and fully remastered. Although there were scenes where the hiss noise derived from the master was noticeable in the previous release, this time, more careful treatment work was performed with the aim of creating a “definitive version of the day” that matches the sound source recorded on Disc 1, and the sound quality that can withstand a high-grade playback environment, such as improving the S/N ratio, was realized. The sound was originally thick and had excellent separation, which was highly praised in specialist magazines, but WHITESNAKE and Cozy Powell fans will be delighted with the upgraded sound image this time. The call that the audience gives to the band and members during the intro S.E. well represents the audience’s expectation that “the long-awaited live show is about to begin,” and the sound of cheers and applause spreading widely is full of a large sense of realism that is typical of a festival. Compared to Disc 1, the taper distance feels a little further from the stage, but the band’s performance, which is concentrated at a higher density, is captured with a solid outline and brightness, and you can enjoy a powerful play with a clear sound image. The numbers from the new work “SLIDE IT IN” at that time and Sykes’ play were completely accepted by the fans at the venue, and the chorus of “Guilty Of Love” even feels spectacular. In “Love Ain’t No Stranger,” the chorus part is impressive, with the stage and the audience working together to create a world of the song. In “Ready An’ Willing,” which sounded like a broadcast source on Disc 1, the band’s heat mixes with the audience’s excitement, making the performance feel even more heated, and all of these are full of the flavor that can only be found in a high-quality audience recording. In “Crying In The Rain,” David’s best vocals in his career and Sykes’ guitar, reminiscent of Gary Moore, dramatically depict the 10-minute drama. The flow from the raging storm-like guitar solo to the moving “Soldier Of Fortune” will move you no matter how many times you listen to it. The recording quality is further improved for “Don’t Break My Heart Again” and “Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues” at the end of the show, and these masterpieces are played in a more masculine and direct sound, and in an explosive excitement. Cozy’s drumming here is truly amazing! Although the recording positions are different, the sound sources on Disc 1 and 2 each realize the same sense of realism as an actual audience seat, and by comparing the two, you can explore the charm of WHITESNAKE in this era more deeply. Being able to enjoy a fulfilling live performance from different perspectives many times is a privilege unique to an excellent audience recording source like this one. The high-quality sound of this work invites fans to Nagoya Stadium on August 4, 1984!
