Description
The tribute concert for Roy Orbison, who died in 1988, was held in February 1990. The event was broadcast on television, and the highlight of the event, the performance of the three Byrds + Bob Dylan, was officially released in a Byrds box set. However, Mike Millard revealed that the concert and event was actually much longer. It was surprising that Millard had recorded the event in the first place, but thanks to him, it was revealed that Johnny Cash had made a video appearance but was completely cut from the actual broadcast. Furthermore, Levon Helm, who was shown singing “Mean Woman Blues” at the beginning of the broadcast, was the MC for the first half of the event even after his own performance. This is also a fact that could not be seen at all from the broadcast. In fact, the performance scenes of NRBQ and actor Gary Busey were completely cut from the broadcast. The show was a showbiz-esque production in the US in the 1990s, and there were enthusiastic applause throughout the broadcast, but listening to the Millard recording, it is clear that it was faked. Certainly, the scenes with John Fogerty, BB King, and Dylan in the Three Byrds were very exciting, but the rest of the show was more calm and peaceful. Fogerty also appeared early in the show, but in reality, he appeared in the latter half of the live show. The biggest surprise was the new fact that the Three Byrds had re-recorded “Turn! Turn! Turn!” due to recording problems. The Three Byrds were the only performers at this event who re-recorded their performance, and it was also surprising that they even played “Eight Miles High”. Millard, who left us with this extremely valuable audience document that cannot be seen from the broadcast, regretted not being able to secure a good position, but the super clear sound quality is truly Millard quality. The atmosphere of the day is so vivid that it cannot be compared to the faked TV broadcast, which shows the true character of the superb audience. And for this release, the 90-minute TV broadcast footage is included as a bonus. It makes you realize how much the program was made ignoring the actual flow of the concert. However, the impact of the new wave-style cover of Roy’s “Dream Baby” by Shrunken Heads, a combination of the remnants of Talking Heads without David Byrne and Wendy and Lisa who had left Prince and the Revolution, and the presence of Bonnie Raitt and KD Lang, who were the main characters of the event and were at the height of their popularity at the time, are unique to the video. Above all, I was surprised at how different the broadcast was from the actual event. The truth of the Roy Orbison tribute revealed for the first time in 35 years by the unexpected mirrored recording! This is interesting and the sound quality is excellent. Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, CA, USA 24th February 1990 TRULY PERFECT SOUND Disc:1 (43:19) 1. Introduction (Whoopi Goldberg) 2.
