Description

Thin Lizzy’s 1976 live performances, from the November London show on the “Johnny the Fox” tour, and the Chicago, Illinois show from the April “Jailbreak” tour six months prior to that, are both packaged in amazing stereo soundboard audio and will be released as a 2-disc set that fans will love! After Eric Bell left the band, Thin Lizzy, with Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson as twin leads, established their musicality and style that is generally recognized with ’74’s “Night Life” and ’75’s “Fighting”. Their March ’76 release, “Jailbreak,” sold over 2 million copies worldwide, marking the peak of their career. The “JAILBREAK” tour, which began in March, was a huge success in the UK and the US, and the band’s schedule became extremely busy as their popularity grew, with additional dates in the UK in July and in various European countries from September to October. The band produced “JOHNNY THE FOX” in August, fitting into the schedule. After the album was released in October, the band continued the “JAILBREAK” tour in November, and continued on with the “JOHNNY THE FOX” tour, which was a tight tour. The “JOHNNY THE FOX” UK tour, which began with a performance in Oxford on October 20, 1976, was so heated that all 25 performances initially booked were sold out, and the performances on stage were also great, as if to respond to the heat. The climax was the performance at London’s “Hammersmith Odeon” for three consecutive days from November 14th to 16th. These three performances were officially recorded, and some of the recordings were used in the official live album “LIVE AND DANGEROUS” in 1978. This recording is the official recording of the Hammersmith Odeon live in November 1976! The existence of leaked live recordings from here has long been rumored among enthusiasts, but finally the soundboard recording from November 15th, the second day of the Hammersmith performance, has been unearthed! The master obtained from a secret route overseas is amazing in both condition and sound quality! This time, this master has been further remastered and turned into a record, and is included as Disc 1 of this work. The brightness backed by a certain freshness, the tightly mixed sound balance, and the sound image that captures the playing of each member in detail are excellent from the original master stage, and the neat ease of listening and the ease of grasping the performance are of a quality approaching the official quality. From the opening song “Jailbreak,” Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson’s twin guitars pop out from the left and right channels, while Phil’s unique vocals and bass line resonate clearly from the center. Brian Downey’s stable drums also have a narrow space and a strong presence, and any LIZZY fan will be amazed by this sound! The main feature of this sound source is that it features the cheers of the fans who packed the venue in moderation, and the realism that you can’t get from a simple line-connected sound board is also wonderful. The tense mood of “Massacre,” which develops into a medley from “Jailbreak,” the freshness of the mellow “Still In Love With You,” and the excitement of “The Boys Are Back In Town,” which gets the venue excited, are all part of the LIZZY live performance that is unique to their heyday, which is rich in color and irresistible! The second half of the show also features “Warriors,” a unique song with a coexistence of rhythm and heaviness, “Baby Drives Me Crazy,” a comfortable driving song as the title suggests, and “The Rocker,” a grand finale. The clever structure and smooth development of the songs will not tire the listener. Considering the official mix that is conscious of the listener, the sound that seems to have been properly edited, and the content that is neither too much nor too little, all of which is compiled into about 75 minutes, it seems that the official release of this live performance alone was intended. This recording can be said to be the genuine ’76 version of “LIVE AND DANGEROUS”! As mentioned above, the three Hammersmith shows on this “JOHNNY THE FOX” tour were recorded, and six songs, “Rosalie / Cowgirl’s Song,” “Massacre,” “Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed,” “Don’t Believe A Word,” “Warriors,” and “Are You Ready,” are said to have been used in “LIVE AND DANGEROUS.” As you know, “LIVE AND DANGEROUS” is a work that has been replaced and edited to the extent that it is said that “75 percent was recorded in the studio,” but it would be interesting for enthusiasts to try to verify how much of the original take can be confirmed at the official live performance. And on Disc 2, from the “JAILBREAK” US tour held in the first half of 1976, the performance in Chicago, Illinois on April 21st is recorded from a wonderful broadcast sound source master that also boasts outstanding cleanliness. Compared to the smart and neat Hammersmith performance, the more direct and powerful sound is full of power. Of course, the original sound source is also properly mixed, and the main feature is that Scott and Robertson’s guitars and Phil’s bass are also recorded with a thick tone. In addition, the guitar and vocals, which are clearly separated compared to the previous releases, will also allow you to enjoy the live performance in a realistic way (the two songs “Jailbreak” and “The Boys Are Back In Town”, which are played in succession at the opening, will clearly show how good the sound is. Also, the pitch, which was quite low in the previous releases, is recorded with accurate pitch in this edition). In this live performance, the songs that make up the core of the set list, such as “Warriors”, “Rosalie” and “Suicide” (the harmony that Phil, Scott and Robertson play in “Rosalie” is a must-listen!), and “Sha La La” and “Baby Drives Me Crazy” in the latter half of the show, are common, but it is a nice point that you can enjoy not only “It’s Only Money” and “Blues Boy” that you cannot hear on Disc 1, but also “JAILBREAK” numbers such as “Emerald” and “Angel From The Coast” with superb sound. At the end of the live performance, “The Rocker” will close the live performance dynamically here as well! THIN LIZZY in 1976 was full of unstoppable power and energy, and the show was very fulfilling. Although we have been able to hear a glimpse of the live performance from audience sources and fragmentary line sources, there have been few soundboard sources in a cohesive form, so we can say with confidence that this 2-CD set is a must-have for fans. Disc 1 is as easy to listen to as the official version and approaches the truth of the masterpiece live album, while Disc 2 allows you to enjoy a more direct and vivid feel than the official version. Both discs have different personalities and allow you to fully enjoy the 1976 live performance at the height of THIN LIZZY’s popularity. This is the long-awaited release that will reign supreme in the history of THIN LIZZY collector’s items for a long time to come!
